Michael Angelo, hairstylist and owner of Michael Angelo’s Wonderland Beauty Parlor in New York City, shares his tips to achieve perfect hair for prom.

The right hairstyle for prom is about much more than matching a hairdo to a dress. A GREAT hairstyle is one that communicates your spirit. Your style says so much about you, so make sure that whatever look you decide on is one that is true to who you are. Trying to look like something you’re not never ends up looking beautiful–it just looks lame.

DO choose a look thats age appropriate.
A young fresh look on a teen is beautiful!

DO choose a look that suits your body type.
Curvy figure, curvy hair. Slim figure, slim hair. Long girls look great in long hairstyles. Shorter girls generally look better in hair that’s up or a bit shorter.

DO choose a look that flatters your face.
Experiment by trying a few looks out with a friend and take photos to see how they look. Not only is this a FUN exercise but its a great way to bond with your bestie!

DO find images of your beauty icons and ask yourself “what is consistent about all of their looks?” This will help you identify what direction you’ll want to take your hair in.

DO search YouTube for how-to videos if you need to DIY. And if your afraid to DIY, DIWF (do it with a friend). Having someone who can see the back and sides of your hairstyle can be a major help. Bonus: when your do is done you can trade seats and lend your friend a helping hand!

DON’T confuse prom with a wedding or the Oscars. There will be plenty of time for those looks late!! Keep your image young and fresh.

DON’T try and be something that you’re not. Prom is not the time to debut the punk rock fantasy that you have secretly been hiding behind your geek chic. Nor is it the time for a prepster to turn pop star. Remember, be the very best YOU that you can be and you’ll love your prom pix when you look back on them.

Try Out the Glee Girls’ SAG Awards Updos!

Didn’t you love Dianna Agron’s and Jenna Ushkowitz’s hair at the SAG Awards? Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylists Jenny Cho and Theodore Leaf tell us how it’s done!

To get Dianna’s look:

“We wanted to merge the vintage and modern look together by doing a
double knot in the back and sweeping the bangs to one side so you get a
glimpse of the effortlessly undone ‘do from every angle,” says Jenny
Cho, Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist.

  1. Add texture to hair by adding Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse to damp hair. You can be generous with the amount of product — in this case, more is better. Blow dry hair with fingers and a medium size round brush to smooth out the ends. Spray Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo all over, concentrating on the roots for extra texture.
  2. Side part the hair with a tail comb and tease crown for a little extra volume. Apply Suave Professionals Sleek Anti-Frizz Cream to hands and split the hair down the center into two sections. Tie a
knot as if you’re tying a bow and secure the first knot with bobby pins
and u-pins. Make another knot right under the first, so it’s double
knotted, and secure with more pins. Leave the ends out to give it the
    undone finish.
  3. Sculpt the front by adding more anti-frizz cream and mold the
fringe to frame the face. Leave a piece out on one side to add a touch
    of looseness.
  4. Finish the look with Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Lightweight Hold Hairspray for a natural, moveable finish.
