This week I trucked over to the Flatiron to celebrate proprietress of pretty, Taylor Chang-Babaian, her book Style Eyes, and her new line, Kre-at Beauty! Sarah asks: “I have a hair type that’s almost never addressed in magazines - relaxed hair! I’m African-American and Irish mixed with naturally extremely frizzy and coarse hair, and because of the texture, and because it’s relaxed it’s really tough to replicate most of the styles in magazines. What do you recommend, style-wise, for girls with relaxed hair?”

So glad you asked, Sarah! And we’re so happy to help. Some of the styles we put in the magazine can be tricky, even for the straightest haired among us. We’ve gotten tons of feedback from girls like you who are looking for some practical and cute looks that work for pretty much everyone, so we turned to the pros for some tips, tricks and styling options for girls with relaxed hair.

“Straight hair styles are great for relaxers,” says Motions Celebrity stylist Ursula Stephen, the wizard behind Rihanna’s amazing styles. “Anything from heavy bangs to the funky shaved side look with fringe - a relaxer gives you the freedom to experiment with these kinds of looks. When getting a cut I suggest you bring as many pictures of the style you want, and from as many angles as you can find. This way you and the stylist are on the same page. You also have to be realistic when choosing a hairstyle or cut - try to find pictures of cuts or styles on people or celebrities that have a similar face shape to yours. Once you’re in the chair, be verbal about what you don’t want and choose a look that you can maintain and that fits your lifestyle and budget.
