Confession: when I was a teen, I was TERRIBLE at taking care of my skin. I’d pick at my spots. I’d lay out in the sun. I’d “forget” to wash my face at night (which caused my mom to lecture me endlessly. Oh, Mom, you were right. As usual). I was pretty much a disaster! I wish I had had the guidance of sage experts like the one and only Howard Murad M.D. (who is, rather impressively, the Associate Clinical Professor at UCLA and founder of Murad Skincare). Here, some skincare facts from him (aka things I wish I’d known as a teen):
Q: Why is it important for teens to wear sunscreen daily?
A: If you take care of your skin now, your skin will thank you later. Many young people believe that problem skin is so far in the future they don’t need to think about it today. But teens and young adults are being exposed to more free radical aggressors and sun damage than ever before so it is imperative to wear sunscreen daily to minimize the possibility of skin cancer. Between sun exposure, tanning beds and free radical damage caused by pollution and stress, the collagen and elastin in the skin is weakened thereby accelerating skin aging.
Q: Are there specific ingredients that teens should look for when selecting topical products?
A: Young adults should choose treatment products that address their specific skincare needs. Teens should steer clear of products containing alcohol and benzoyl peroxide as those ingredients will dry the complexion. Products containing botanical ingredients and essential oils are much better options for teen skin.
Q. I sometimes forget to wash my face at night. Is it really that important to wash your face twice a day?
A. Washing your face allows you to remove the impurities, residue and oil that collect on the skin, helping improve skin health and appearance. During the day, your skin is exposed to environmental pollutants, sweat, oil production, UV damage and much more. That’s why washing your face at night is critical. It is also important to wash in the morning as you are still encountering free radicals and harmful environmental elements, such as dust and recycled air, during the evening and while you are sleeping. Washing in the morning gives your skin a clean and fresh start to the day.

Seventeen is all about supporting worthy causes, social
change, and helping those in times of need. What makes it even more fun is when
you can do that by buying cute jewelry. That’s the idea behind Jewelry for a
Cause, a line of jewelry whose sales will raise money for DoSomething.org. Do
Something is an organization that promotes service and social action
initiatives for teens an young adults. Jewelry for a Cause has created a line
of unique, young and fun necklaces that any girl could work into her stylish
wardrobe, all while supporting volunteerism.
Jessica Mindich, a jewelry designer, has created the
collection, TALISMANS, with each piece including a charm featuring Buddha,
peace signs, daisies and other fun icons. Every necklace is accompanied with a tag
revealing the meaning behind the image on the charm. Each necklace only costs
$25. Seventeen loves cheap and cute jewelry! Proceeds from the TALISMANS line
go to DoSomething.org through January 2011.
Do Something is a program that helps young people get
involved with different charities. They support everything from animal welfare
and disaster relief to bullying and HIV. Last year the organization encouraged
850,000 teens to help a cause and this year they are on track for 1.2 million
teens to find something they want to support! With such a great cause behind
it, why not buy some jewelry and help your community at the same time?
Visit the jewelryforacause.net to buy a necklace
from the TALISMANS line and check out dosomething.org if you are feeling
inspired to help out your favorite cause!
