I’ve been chatting with the fab hairstylists at Beverly Hills salon Blow LA (which specializes in blowouts, duh), and they illuminated to me some common–very common–hair mistakes. They were too interesting not to share, so here goes. Read on to learn more!
1) Overuse of hair products: It can cause flatness of hair, excess grease, loss of shape, and even a dry look.
2) Improper use of styling tools: Especially overusing a flatiron or directly pressing a blow-dryer against hair. Both cause burning of the hair.
3) Not removing enough moisture from the hair before using a brush or blowing out hair: It can cause loss of volume, hair damage, and dryness. If moisture is taken out first, blow-dry time can be cut in half!

Last night I went to what was undoubtedly one of the coolest events I’ve ever attended. Wella Professionals Lead Color Ambassador, Aura Friedman, led me through a “behind the scenes” tour of my hair color. It was the first time in my life anyone had ever mixed my color right in front of me, explaining all the different tones and shades in each tube, goo, and powder, and I feel like I have a much better understanding now of what I should ask for, and look for when I go to get blonded. Aura also stressed the importance of a good consultation saying “Always bring pictures with you when you want something different, and be able to point to specific areas in the pictures that look like something you like.” During our consultation I told Aura how much I love my super-platinum locks, but they’re just too high maintenance! She looked at the shape of my face, my hair texture, my overall style (at 6:30 PM my overall style is “disheveled!”) and finally the tones in my skin to come up with the perfect formula. Aura whipped the formulas onto my locks all the while telling me stories about “the last time I did Lady Gaga’s color,” or “the last time I colored M.I.A.” Umm….. Amazing! I left with slightly ombre beigey blond to silver-white platinum ends. Perfect! Here is Aura’s list of things to consider next time you want to change your hue:
If you want to go…
“Black– Jet black hair can look very shiny and healthy because when you dye hair darker, you only deposit color - you don’t lift any - so there is less chance to damage the hair.
Brown– The way brown haircolor affects the hair can depend on several factors. One of them being the tone. If it is a warm brunette, it can sparkle and reflect light more easily. If it is a cool tone, it can absorb light and appear slightly matte. Another factor is the starting point and how light you want to go. If you are lifting the hair from dark brown to lighter, there will be a lot of warmth exposed which will need to be counteracted by adding ash or green tones.
Red– A common myth among women is that it’s hard to pull of being a redhead. Anyone can look great with the right red, which is why you need to consult a professional who can determine what works best for your complexion (don’t try this at home!). One of the challenges with reds is keeping them vibrant, but with Wella Professional’ permanent color, even traditionally fast-fading reds last 15% longer.
Blonde– Blonde is the most requested color service in salons and can run the gamut from icy platinum to warm, honey highlights. With blondes it’s important to take special care to be gentile on hair because most often you need to lighten it to get it to the desired level and tone. It’s also important to seal the cuticle so that light can bounce off and reflet because typically it’s harder for blondes to achieve great shine. In fac, warmer tones will appear shinier than cooler tones, so keep that in mind. Blonde can also give body to hair, dimension, and the appearance of having more hair. Highlighting around the hairline makes color look more natural and softens bone structure.”
