For most of my life I’ve been blonde (I dabbled in purple, pink, and fire-engine red, without much success) but lately I’ve had the urge to go MEGABLONDE! I was thinking “Nordic Blonde” - icy and sparkly! So I set myself up with Nancy at Ted Gibson (who is insanely adorable) hoping to exit the salon radiating Scandinavian gorgeousness (despite the fact that I’m half Hispanic and naturally have an Ernie-esque black unibrow). Nancy, however, stopped me in my tracks, informing me that the image I had conjured of myself was far from attainable, lest I wanted to keep a single hair on my head. Ah yes, I’d rather be medium blonde than bald! So, she strategically wove in some amazingly pretty highlights, and finished me off with a deep conditioning treatment, and the end result is so gorgeous it has me rethinking my platinum ambitions. Like the purple, perhaps white-blonde was an ill-conceived idea. My hair is definitely lighter than when I went in, but not so dramatic as, say, Lindsay Lohan. While I was getting washed and glossed and toned, I got the chance to meet the amazing Jason Backe, who is the Master Colorist at Ted Gibson as well as Clairol’s Color Director, and he gave me the scoop on color!
How long should girls wait in between each time they get their hair colored?
You should color your hair as soon as your new growth is annoying you or any time you are unhappy with your color. There really is no set amount of time you “should” wait. As long as you are going to a colorist who is meticulous in their application and has a thorough understanding of color theory, you can color as frequently as you like.
Is there anything you can do before you get your hair lightened to minimize damage? Do you think a deep conditioning treatment before is helpful?
It’s kind of like thinking you need to lose 5 lbs before a big event, If you start your diet the day before the event you aren’t going to have the best results possible. The best thing to do to prevent damage when you color is to have an at-home maintenance routine that you follow. It’s important to shampoo as little as possible, to use color protective shampoos and conditioners like Ted Gibson’s Clarity Color and get regular treatments. It’s not so much about “what can I do the day before” as it is the steps you
take every day to keep your hair healthy.
