Minxed by Lisa Logan!

minx.jpgPardon me while I hyperventilate, but I was just “Minxed” by manicurist to
one of my top four favorite people (BEYONCE!!!), Lisa Logan, and the large portion of my brain devoted to nails is on excitement overload. Lisa is
amazing, and definitely one of the most in-demand nail artists around. She’s so sweet, and we had a blast being total nail nerds
and comparing favorite “mossy gray minty greens” and debating the merits of concrete gray vs storm cloud grey vs almost almost white but not
quite grey. After showing me the insane collection of Minx options she totes around (including some holographic options that she was planning to use on B the next day (seriously? I melted inside when Lisa called Beyonce “B”)) Lisa fixed me up with the newest line of Minx, called Teasers. From one angle they look a certain color, but from a different angle they
look totally different! Amazing. I went with red and gold, and I’m
officially obsessed. And after hearing about Lisa’s celeb clients, I’m definitely in
good company! Check out Minxnails.com to check out the new lines and to find
a salon near you!

30 Days of Hair: Hat Hair Fix

hat-hair-fix.jpgAs a current New Yorker (and former Chicagoan), I’ve come to accept the fact that during the winter, certain beauty sacrifices have to be made for the sake of staying warm. Case in point: HAT HAIR. Yes, wearing a thick winter hat–even if it’s an adorable knit one from Marc by Marc or a wool number with ear flaps by Eugenia Kim–inevitably leaves my hair looking flat and lifeless once I take it off, but is it worth not wearing one and risking pneumonia? Definitely not. So I took my hat hair dilemma to Dante at Bumble and Bumble Salon, who, in addition to regularly cutting my own hair, has logged in serious styling hours at New York Fashion Week. Here’s what he had to say:

“Although it’s tough to regain volume or shape to your hair once it’s been flattened, it’s not impossible! Applying a little hot air is your best bet for giving hair a boost. If possible, keep a tiny travel blow-dryer in your locker, or if that isn’t possible, just flip your head and put it under the bathroom hand dryer for a few seconds. While the head is still upside down, add a little hairspray at the root, flip your hair over, and put it in place with your hands. (Don’t brush, as this can make the hair fall flatter. Tension makes the hair less elastic and causes it to fall.) If your hair gets a little greasy or damp under the hat, a dry shampoo or powder will give it a huge boost as well. Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder is an easy one to use and should only be applied to the roots. For short hair, use a pomade like Bumble’s Sumotech that is re-moldable and can be reactivated with a spritz of water, so you can quickly restyle after you take off the hat.

To avoid the hat hair problem altogether, wear your hair in any tight style, such as a neat pony or French twist. Also, the type and material of the hat can make a big difference. Rougher knits cause friction that can make hair frizzy. If possible, choose a hat with a satin or silk liner. And since a hat squishes the hair and creates heat, which in combination can still cause indentations, keep the hat a little loose.”

Backstage Beauty: Amazing Red Glitter Eyes and Lips!

The makeup look at Betsey Johnson’s show was just like Betsey herself — fun! Sarah Lucero of Stila incorporated seriously smoky eyes, dewy skin and red splashes of glitter into this “good girl gone bad” look and I got a behind-the-scenes view at how it came together. Watch my video and follow the steps to recreate the edgy vibe!

Steps to getting the look:

  1. Start with tinted moisturizer all over the face.
  2. Apply dark gray or black eye shadow to lids. Don’t worry about blending perfectly. Finish with silver glitter eye shadow on top.
  3. Line eyes with black eyeliner. Apply several coats of black mascara.
  4. Take an eye shadow brush dipped in red glitter to make splashes across eyelid.
  5. Brush on a dark red (almost black) lipstick. Top with a little red glitter.
