Night Owl

midnightrain.jpgThere’s no such thing in my book as too much glitter (unless, of course, we’re talking about Mariah Carey’s movie Glitter). And that, my dears, is why I love La Prairie’s beyond pretty Midnight Rain fragrance! In addition to being a luscious scent, the bottle is glitterrific!!! Definitely worth a try–visit Laprarie.com to find a location near you that sells this must-have!

Winter Tint: Bloom Lip Stain

  1. bloom-lipgloss.jpg

Bloom’s lip gloss was probably the first makeup item that I stole from my mom as a kid. What can I say? I was in love with the vanilla scent and berry-hued tint. When a bunch of Bloom lip glosses and stains came across my desk the other day, I freaked out! I opened them and immediately the vanilla scent brought me back to junior high school. Now, even as an adult, I still love the stuff, and am even more excited by the addition of their lip stains to my makeup bag. I’m crazy for Cinnamon, a beautiful berry color ($22). Since it’s freezing outside here in New York, and my cheeks keep getting extremely rosy, I like to tone down my makeup with a quick swipe of mascara and Bloom’s lip stain. Best of all? With stains, the color dries fast, and you barely need to reapply. Beautybybloom.com

30 Days Of Hair: Winter Warm-Up Tips For Brunettes

highlights.jpgIt’s been fifteen years since I last colored my dark brown-black hair. Back then, super chunky highlights were in and my head resembled a tiger’s striped mane. (I can’t believe I thought it looked cool…) Thankfully, I got over that trend pretty quickly, and I’ve been afraid of coloring ever since. For fair-haired girls who color, different blonde tones seem to generally blend well together, ensuring a natural-looking finish. But when it comes to coloring dark hair, getting a noticeable yet natural “I could’ve been born with this fabulous hair color” result seems to be a lot tougher. I say this based not only on my own experience, but from observing countless brunettes on the street with skunk-like highlights. Recently, however, the onset of winter sparked in me the desire for a slightly warmer tone. (My increasingly pale complexion set against my long, dark locks makes for one tired-looking girl.) With unpleasant memories of my former brassy highlights entrenched in my mind, I nervously decided to face my hair color fears head-on with Reyad Fritas, colorist extraordinaire at Fr??d??ric Fekkai salon. A A A A
“You’re right, brunettes don’t color as much as blondes do, because most of them are afraid that it’ll look unnatural. Maybe they had a bad coloring experience in the past, like you did,” he said. “But for brunettes, it’s always good to go warmer, in any season. When I say warmer, I’m not talking about going a lot lighter; I mean incorporating shades of chocolate, caramel, chestnut,” he said, quickly adding, “Using red on brunettes is over.” A As I sat in his chair, I found solace in the fact that he’s a big proponent of keeping color subtle. (”Brunettes should always stay with natural tones. It’s more classy!”) A He explained that he would be giving me lowlights, which deposit color onto the hair, as opposed to highlights, in which bleach removes pigment from hair–a no-no for dark-haired girls, according to Fritas. “A common mistake that colorists make is to work on brunettes the same way they do on blondes. Doing lowlights on brunettes instead of highlights not only creates a more natural color, but it’s less damaging to the hair because there’s no ammonia,” he said. To determine your ideal lowlight tone, he suggests going a shade or two lighter than your eye color, which put me in the caramel range.
He applied the color mixture to my hair using the Balayage technique. “It’s where you sweep the color onto sections of the hair using a brush, so that you get just a gentle touch of the color without ending up with any harsh lines or chunks. I also focus the color on the ends more than at the crown, because that’s where your hair would naturally get lighter from the sun,” he explained. Afterwards, I waited for about half an hour and then was ushered to the shampoo station by Fritas’ assistant, Raven Pe??a. She washed my hair with Fekkai’s Salon Technician Color Care Shampoo and Conditioner, which are loaded with anti-fade ingredients, and then finished by giving me a cold water rinse. “I know you might not think to do it during the winter, but a cold rinse is a great way to boost shine, reduce frizz, and increase circulation in your scalp,” she said. She advised me to avoid shampooing for the next two to three days in order to allow the color to really deposit well into the hair.
After my hair was blown out, I turned to look in the mirror and gasped at my reflection. It still looked like my own hair, but 1,000 times better–exactly what I wanted! Beautiful maple brown tones softly framed my face and blended throughout my own natural color, and my skin tone didn’t look washed out anymore. As I continued staring at my hair in amazement, Fritas pointed out that lowlights applied with the Balayage technique require minimal upkeep. “To maintain this look, you’d only need to go to the salon twice a year at most,” he assured. In a matter of seconds, my fifteen-year-long phobia of hair color completely vanished.
