My nails always freak out in the winter, for some reason. I think it’s the combination of the dryness (NYC radiators suck all the moisture out of the air!) and, well, stress from being FREEZING! I recently got some great info from Shari Gottesman, the founder of Perfect Formula nailcare, and just had to share with you!

Problem: my nails won’t grow!
“The key to flexibility is getting enough moisture with a good nail oil.  Other factors that can contribute to weak, brittle nails are poor nutrition, nail biting and not wearing gloves, both in the cold, and during tasks like dish washing.  I also recommend using crystal nail files, which don’t cause the microscopic tears that lead to splitting and breakage.”

Problem: Discoloration
“There are many causes for yellow nails or minor discoloration from injury, to infection to nutrition to tobacco usage.  If you want to have a naked nail look, go for a strengthener or top coat that is formulated with optical brighteners to cancel out the yellow, such as our Pink Gel Coat.  Pronounced nail discoloration can signify a serious medical issue, so be sure to see a doctor if you are unsure about whether it is minor discoloration.”
 
Problem: Ridges
“According to the Mayo Clinic, vertical ridges are increasingly common as you age and are not cause for concern.  There are a few things that can mitigate this.  A good buffer is in order to help smooth out the surface.  I am against buffing any layers off the nail for normal nail maintenance because I believe you need all layers in tact if you want long, strong nails, but this is one instance where some buffing can be useful to help even out the surface. There are some effective ridge filling nail formulas out there, but alternately, you can just add a few extra coats of regular nail polish, which will also help to fill in ridges.”
