Party Planning With Donny Brown

DiorTree.jpg

John Galliano’s Dior Christmas Tree for Claridge’s

I get so excited for holiday parties I nearly burst! Every year my dad and I throw a big party (which he calls the annual pachanga) and my mind is already racing with party ideas. To help get things in line before the big night, I tapped wedding and party planner Donny Brown from the Style Network for his top tips!

“1. Consider your overall budget. If you don’t personally have the funds to have a nice party, why not invite one or more friends to co-host!
2. Develop a list of party ideas. Make sure to adjust your budget once your concept is imagined. Your theme may have implications for your budget. Options are endless.
3. When hosting at home be sure to have lit candles, your fireplace, and any other ambience-enhancing items you have available. Good lighting is always key at any party. Consider the temperature and make sure it is a warm and inviting environment. Use accent lighting where available and avoid brightly lit spaces. Everyone looks better in dramatic accent lighting.
4. Envision what you and your friends will do at your party. Have ideas in mind for fun activities. Perhaps have a few surprises for your guests too. Keep them entertained and they will stick around a bit longer, therefore enhancing the success of your event.
5. I always prefer paper invites when possible. If you cannot afford them, don’t use invite services like Evite. Those types of online services make their money by selling the entire mailing list to spam companies. Your friends will appreciate your not doing that to them. Additional junk mail is no holiday gift! You can create a holiday inspired email with all the information contained in your artistic vision of your party and send it out with a request to reply by email in order to RSVP. Again, use the paper variety if you can, but don’t skimp on your party in order to do so.”
