Chatting With Olympic Snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis

Lindsey-J.gifNever in my life have I wanted to hit the slopes more than I do lately! Which is to say, this is the first time in my life I’ve wanted to take up snowboarding…I am not a cold weather person! With the winter Olympics just around the corner, I’ve had the opportunity to chat with a number of amazing athletes, and am now majorly inspired to brave the cold and snow. 24 year old Lindsey Jacobellis is an Olympic silver medalist, and a multiple X Games gold and silver medalist in snowboarding. She’s been at it since she was a little kid, and it seems for this blonde beauty, sports are in her genes!
How did you get started snowboarding?
My brother was basically the pioneer for the family! I started when I was nine. But I didn’t get as into it until I was 11, which is when I started competing.
A
When you were a little kid, what did you want to do?
I was always put into different athletic programs starting with T-Ball, and I did all the sports available in high school and middle school. But I was always an honors student and I was thinking of going to school for animal science at University of Vermont. I’m on deferral right now with them, but I don’t know when I’ll get back to that!
A
What do you like to do on your days off?
In the summertime I like to surf, which I don’t get to do often because of where I live, but my brother and I have a boat and we go out on that on the weekend, and I wake-surf behind, which is comparable to regular surfing. I really like all kinds of summer sports; I’m just a very active person!
A
A
How do you motivate yourself to practice when you just really don’t want to?
Everyone has those days! Usually I have them after a bad crash or I’m really sore. But the best way to protect myself is to work out and make my body and joints as strong as possible.
A
A
How much time every week do you spend training before the Olympics?
I actually haven’t really changed my workout schedule in four years. I train five days a week, but then I do active things on the weekends, so really I’m active nonstop!
A
A
What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in getting to where you are?
Having to learn to travel so much, and to get ready the next day for your competition. It takes a lot out of you mentally and physically. Sometimes though the traveling is fun. I like going to Telluride. We’ve been able to free ride as a team there and we can venture out and explore the mountain. Usually at an event you arrive, and right away it’s training and then the race and then the next day you leave. Last time I went to Telluride we had lots of time to free ride, so I’m excited to go back in December.
A
When you’re training and competing, what’s your favorite gear?
I always work out in an Under Armour Movement Short. It’s super lightweight! I don’t like having heavy things on me, I don’t like feeling tangled up when I’m working out, so these shorts are perfect.
How do you keep your skin and lips protected when you’re training?
I use Shiseido sunscreen and their lip cream. I really, really like the feeling of their products, so I use those when I surf too!
A
For all the curly girls…what do you use in your hair? It’s amazing!!
Fortunately, I’ve been a rider for Paul Mitchell for the past 7 years. I hated my hair growing up because I didn’t know how to deal with it and every year when everyone else got a cute trendy haircut, I never could! But when I was 17 or 18 I figured out a process with my hair and Paul Mitchell really helped me with that. They showed me what all the products do and how to put them in. I pretty much just use their leave-in conditioner and then some gloss drops for frizz, especially on the east coast!
A
A
What advice do you have for other aspiring Olympic athletes?
You just have to be sure you really truly love it. You’ll have to give up certain things to get ahead, you have to lose something to gain something. I didn’t go to a normal high school, or get to do a lot of things that other kids were doing, all for the sport. A So the most important thing is just to be really, really sure you love the sport otherwise it won’t feel worth it.

Glow On with Revolution Organics Freedom Beauty Balm!

Beauty-Balm---Final-Group-hi.gifI recently discovered cream blush and it is my now my favorite makeup item! I used to pile on bronzer because I am naturally pretty pale, but now I am embracing that. I am especially a fan of Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm in Sunkissed. This cream cheek blush is perfect for adding a little hint of color without looking too severe. I also love that this is 100% natural and free of synthetic chemicals. It doesn’t make my sometimes sensitive skin break out. Best of all? It is multifunctional–it can even be used as lip balm and eye shadow!A

Fight Winter Dry Out With ChapStick

Fresh-Effects-Refreshing-Mandarin.gifHere in New York, the seasons seem to have leap-frogged over summer and fall, landing smack in the middle of winter. It’s been absolutely freezing, and so cold and windy these days that I’m already feeling the dreaded winter dry-out! More terrifying to me than itchy skin are dried out, flaky, split and bleeding lips. No kidding, on my “what 5 things would you have on a deserted island” list, lip balm comes in second to sunscreen. So we turned to Milicent Brooks, Senior Manager of Corporate Communications for ChapStick to debunk a popular lip balm myth and find out how to prevent the feared lip-split!

- Is it true that you can become addicted to lip balm?
No. Lip balms protect your lips and lock in the moisture to keep
them soft, smooth and looking healthy every day. There is nothing
addictive about ChapStick lip balms, they just give you healthy looking
and feeling lips with regular use.
A - What are some ingredients you should look for in lip balm?
Aloe, Vitamin E, and natural butters, including Avocado, Shea and Raspberry.

- How can you keep lips flake free?

Your lips are covered by soft tissue that needs moisture. Lips tend to dry out when exposed to cold weather or very sunny days. Often, chapped lips get worse because they can’t retain enough moisture to prevent further drying. That’s why it’s important to carry a lip balm with you to keep lips hydrated.

- How do you heal lips that are already chapped . . .or even worse, split!
Some days, it takes a little bit more to help keep lips looking and feeling their healthy best. That’s what ChapStick Medicated is all about. It quickly soothes the pain, hydrates with moisturizers, and seals in moisture with a light, protective barrier to help protect severely dry, chapped lips.
