Donyale McRae works BTS at Project Runway, prettifying scores of women and girls and models… Luckily for us, he has a plethora of helpful tips that he’s willing to share! Read on for his favorite steals and splurges…
His favorite budget items:
“For deep cleaning, St. Ives Apricot Scrub Blemish and Blackhead Control exfoliates dead skin cells which, together with overactive oil glands, are the major cause of breakouts. Using this product every 3 days will insure better performance and control of acne. I also like L’Oreal Skin Toner which helps to normalize the PH levels of your skin after daily cleansing.”
His must-have splurge items:
“Urban Decay! They have a very fresh approach to makeup. I especially like their cream shadows, they’re super-easy to apply and last all day. Korres Natural Products Pomegranate Regimen Kit is all-natural, all-day control for oily skin. It contains three items to control problem skin and helps to create a wonderful palette for makeup application. And finally, Makeup Forever HD makeup collection . It has about one hundred uses for when skin has to look perfect and light. I recommend the new HD foundation line and the incredible new concealers with a built in applicator brush.”
His top tips for teens:
“Rule One:
Keep it simple…Simple equals Chic!!
Rule Two:
If you don’t know how to apply powder eye shadows, try the cream ones–they are simple to use and come in an array of exciting colors for the fall. They have great staying power.
Rule Three:
Do use a powder blush in soft pink or apricot. It will help you achieve a pulled together look.”

Hollywood makeup artist Julie Hewett, who has her own eponymous line of fabulous cosmetics, had the fortunate opportunity to work with Miley Cyrus on her upcoming movie The Last Song. The film doesn’t come out until next spring, but here, Julie talks about her on-set experience and upcoming launches exclusively with Teen Vogue:
“Miley is so beautiful and has such style–I really think she’s amazing! We had so much fun working together on set. Miley taught me how to use Twitter, and now I’m hooked! For her makeup look in the movie, I wanted something fresh, so I used my Ora Mineral Bronzing Powder in Sun to warm her skin up, and then I applied Camellia Balm on her lips. Speaking of the Camellia balm, it just re-launched in an new amazing organic formula and we also introduced two tinted hues, Ruby (ravishing rouge) and Rose (petal pink). This multi-tasking balm is one of Miley’s favorite Julie Hewett products! I also created–or, should I say, SHE created–a new Cheekie, which is my cheek-and-lip shine-in-one product. Called Destiny (after Miley’s real name), it’s a subtle peony-pink color, which is perfect for when you want a light and natural look. And FYI, I also made a new lipstick shade called Ronnie for her character’s party makeup look, and it will be launching in January for all to try!”
