Faux Minx From Orly!

OrlyFoil.jpgHow amazing is this new color from Orly? It’s part of their upcoming spring collection of foils and is supposed to look like Minx! I went crazy and stuck a few rhinestones on, just to ensure maximum blingy-ness. The line, which includes this silver, a gold shade, and a slightly more copper hue, will be available in March at OrlyBeauty.com for $8! My polish addiction gets worse by the day…

If You’re Thinking of Getting A Major Haircut…

locks-of-love.jpgThen don’t forget about Locks of Love! It’s a great organization that makes wigs for kids with medical hair loss. Nexxus actually just partnered up with them to create a great tutorial on how to prep your hair for donation! I’m growing out my hair now again and will probably donate if it ever grows super-long again!

Winter Wonderland: Tocca and Bluemercury Candle

tocca-candle.jpgWhat does winter smell like? Well, if you ask me, it smells delicious: woodsy pine cones, cinnamon, crisp wintry air, maybe some hot chocolate too! Basically, it smells like the mythical ski chalet that I’ve never spent any time in–but a girl can dream, right? Today, I’m one step closer to the slopes with Tocca’s new candle. Created with bluemercury (one of my fave beauty destinations), Candela in Tahoe smells super warm, cozy, and pine-tree-ish! Get your dose of ski chic for $36 at a bluemercury store near you!

Health Alert: The Dangers of Diet Pills

diet-pills-health-alert.jpg

Diet pills may seem like a quick fix, but the risks are heavy.

Ads that promise a slimmer figure by popping a pill–no exercise or healthy eating required!–are everywhere, from newspapers and magazines to tv and the Internet. Clearly, the claims work to lure in people: Consumers bought $1.67 bullion worth of weight-loss supplements in 2007 alone, according to Nutrition Business Journal. Recently, however, diet pills have come under fire for their potentially harmful (and sometimes even fatal) effects. Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration discovered that 69 different over-the-counter weight-loss supplements, including ones advertised as “natural” or “herbal,” were secretly spiked with potent pharmaceutical ingredients that could cause serious health complications, such as seizures and strokes. A few months later, fourteen products within the Hydroxycut brand–one of the top-selling weight-loss supplement lines–were recalled because of reports of liver failure and heart problems among users.

According to experts, hidden ingredients are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dangers associated with weight-loss supplements. “I saw a patient who was taking Hydroxycut and another medication at the same time, and the patient came to the hospital with jaundice and hepatitis,” says Ann Scheimann, M.D., a pediatric gastroenterologist at Johns Hopkins Children’sA Center in Baltimore, Maryland. “Dietary supplements aren’t regulated. When you buy them, you’re taking a risk.” Pills can also have a diuretic effect causing the body to lose fluids and disturbing electrolyte levels. Furthermore, using laxatives–even herbal ones like senna–as a weight-loss tool can weaken bowels and make them dependent on pills. “Eventually, you’ll be unableA to move your bowels without them,” says Scheimann.

Capsules that claim to boost metabolism may hike up your blood pressure and heart rate to dangerous levels. “Even in the short term, the potential effects of increased blood pressure and heart rate are stroke and cardiac ischemia, which is when blood stops flowing to the heart muscle,” warns Laurie Mitan, M.D., an associate professor at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. “We’ve had teens hospitalized in our ICU with cardiac ischemia after using diet pills just one time!” Even Alli, the only over-the-counter weight-loss pill approved by the FDA, doesn’t provide a quick solution: If you don’t stick to a reduced-calorie, super-low-fat diet while taking Alli, you could end up dealing with messy side effects (hence the drugmaker’s suggestion that first-time users wear dark pants). And while it’s approved to be sold at pharmacies nationwide, Alli is currently undergoing a review by the FDA because of reports of liver failure.

Style Council: Remy’s Nurse Halloween Costume!

Nurse RemyThe not so naughty nurse. Every year around this time in October, Ricky’s pop up stores start taking their name and pop up…everywhere. Halloween in New York just wouldn’t be the same without them. Now, although my
costume choice seems a bit average, don’t worry ladies, you’ll make
your mark at any Halloween bash in this look.

The
candy colors help transform the usual boring white nurse costume into
something with spice. This season is all about the statement lips, so
opt for something red! I LOVE Clinique’s “Red-y to Wear.” Add a clutch and some killer pumps that you already own (in any color) and this is sure to be a recession friendly costume.

Costume: Nurse

Reason: You can never go wrong with being something sweet on Halloween.

Verdict: Being a nurse never looked so chic.
