No doubt about it…. Dermatologist Heidi Waldorf, MD, is a skincare genius–so I asked her for her favorite drugstore skincare picks. Happy shopping!
“The most common dermatologic issue for teens is acne. Moderate or severe acne needs to be treated by a dermatologist, but for early, or mild, acne, drug store products may help. The basis of most of the over-the-counter medications is salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. The key is not to overdry the skin so most teens don’t need the active ingredient in every step, but can pick something from the following.
I like the Neutrogena Wave or Clean and Clear Blackhead eraser: both of these battery powered gadgets utilize a textured pad with a salicylic acid wash on a vibrating base. (The highest concentration sal acid available on these is 1%.) Used one to three times a week, they help loosen comedones (blackheads and whiteheads) chemically and physically for smoother skin
For a more concentrated therapy, Neutrogena Rapid Clear Treatment Pads contain 2% salicylic acid and can be applied over the full face daily. For spot therapy, both Clean and Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment and Neutrogena Acne Eliminating Spot Gel contain 2% salicylic acid and Clean and Clear Persagel 10 contains 10% benzoyl peroxide (which will be more drying).
For someone with acne and sensitive or dry skin, start with a lower concentration like Aveeno Clear Complexion Daily Cleansing Pads or Clear Complexion Foaming Cleanser, each with 0.5% salicylic acid. The Aveeno foaming wash also contains soy for increased hydration.
To blot oil, I used to send people to specialty cosmetic stores for Japanese rice paper. Now, Neutrogena makes Shine Control Blotting Sheets.
Teens with dry skin naturally or those with dry skin as a result of acne medications, can benefit from using a gentle cleanser. CeraVe cleansing lotion is more moisturizing than Cetaphil and also available in drug stores. I also recommend use of a moisturizer with sunscreen each morning, alone or over acne products. Cetaphil daily facial moisturizer with SPF 15 is light and oil free. Dove and Eucerin make more moisturizing facial lotions with sun protection. For evening, try CeraVe lotion or cream (the lotion is lighter, the cream heavier).”
