Top Tips for Zapping School Stress

You're-Accepted.jpgYogaworks Instructor Katie Malachuk is an admissions coach when she’s not teaching downward facing dog. Talk about two seemingly VERY different fields–and yet… Not! Her new book, You’re Accepted: Lose the Stress. Discover Yourself. Get into the college that’s right for you aims to help teens turn the application process from a frenzied stressed out situation to something calmer and more meaningful. Some of her tips include:

Make the journey the destination. Yoga students everywhere know how thrilling it is the first time you successfully kick up into handstand. However, getting your feet above your head is not going to change your life. The real prize is the lessons you learned on your way up - perseverance, patience, playfulness, and poise. The same thing goes when applying to college. Instead of focusing on the outcome, get curious about what you can learn from process itself - what’s important to you, what you love to do, what you hope to accomplish in life. If you use this experience for self-discovery, you can walk away with not only a school acceptance but also a far more precious gift: self-acceptance.”

Be yourself. The biggest mistake applicants make is trying to be what they think schools want. Yoga philosophy tells us that we don’t need to accumulate a bunch of stuff to be the best version of ourselves. So drop the notion of adding stuff you don’t care about to your resume just for marketing. Instead find the extra-curriculars and courses that help you follow your bliss - the things you love to do that reveal your true self. Because being perfect on paper is nowhere near as fun or interesting as being perfectly you.”

Do your own practice. It’s tempting during yoga practice to look around the room, envying people with beautiful poses, fit bodies, fancier clothes. It’s easy to fall into this pattern when applying to college too, wishing you had the grades or scores or resume of those around you. But nothing messes you up more in life than wanting to be someone other than fabulous you. Try to do your own practice - stay focused on your life rather than coveting someone else’s. Maybe you can even slip into your bigger person suit and move from competition into compassion. If you give out affirmation and support to your friends and classmates, it will come right back to you. And you’ll all feel better for it.”

Breath. Ok, it’s the understatement of all understatements to say that breathing is important. But during stressful times like this, breathing can help your mind as well as your body. As you move through yoga poses that are uncomfortable and difficult, you try to stay focused on your breath.  Slowing down and deepening your breath can chill you out.  When you’re in the thick of stress around SATs, essays, parents’ requests, schoolwork, see if you can pause and take three long, slow, smooth breaths.  It’s like a mini-vacation, and your body and mind will thank you for it. Try it right now!”

I should mention, btw, that Katie graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and has an MBA from Stanford. So clearly she knows what she’s talking about! Check out her book at barnesandnoble.com!

Beauty Intern Natasha’s Top Ten Must-Have Products

  1. gardenerstherapy.jpeg

Crabtree & Evelyn GARDENERS HAND THERAPY CREAM
I can’t live without this moisturizing cream. My grandmother (who gardens) recommended the cream to me years ago, and I’ve been an addict ever since! I even bought one for Teen Vogue Accessories Editor Sarah Kuhn for her birthday after she kept stealing mine. Believe me, your hands will never be as smooth as they are when using this product. $8, crabtree-evelyn.com

  2. c.booth.JPG

C.Booth SKIN BELOW THE CHIN EXFOLIATING DAILY BODY SCRUB IN FRESH & CLEAN
I wish they sold this exfoliator by the gallon, because I would buy it. I have very sensitive skin, and the exfoliating beads don’t ever feel like they’re ripping my skin away. The beads are made of organic rice bran and are designed to scrub away dead cells and promote cell turnover. You’ll notice that this claim is actually true when your gams are soft and glowing. I always follow with the Fresh & Clean Daily Body Moisturizer or Vitamin E Nourishing Dry Oil Body Mist. $7, drugstore.com

  3. euphoria.jpg

Calvin Klein EUPHORIA Although I have an entire shelf of perfumes, I always seem to reach for my Euphoria. I would describe the scent as full-bodied with a mix of spicy and floral undertones. I love that I can wear it in both the daytime and the nighttime and that it always provides a sense of intrigue. People frequently ask me what perfume I’m wearing and then walk away towards the nearest Sephora. Rollerball: $19.50 (Genius! I need one for my purse.), sephora.com

  4. Thumbnail image for barbasol.jpg

    Barbasol Shaving Cream SOOTHING ALOE
A friend of mine who temporarily became my roommate last summer brought this wonderful product into my shower. I made fun of her for using something that claimed it was a “beard buster,” but she assured me that it was the cheapest and the best shaving cream on the market. Needless to say, she was right. I love the creamy texture and the fact that it has aloe in it. My legs are never irritated by shaving anymore. $3, drugstore.com

  5. Lip Tone.72.jpg

    Blistex LIP TONE, SPF 15
Always on the prowl for a tinted chapstick, I discovered Blistex’s Lip Tone a few years ago and have been a loyal fan every since. Lip Tone enhances my natural pigment with a slight touch of color, provides SPF 15 and moisturizes all at once! For me, Lip Tone delivers a slightly mauve/pink color that makes my pout look natural and moisturized. $2, drugstore.com

  6. BEfoundation.jpg

Bare Escentuals: bareMinerals ORIGINAL SPF 15 FOUNDATION
I never wore foundation before bareMinerals. My skin is so sensitive that even tinted moisturizers make me break out. That’s the magic of the bareMinerals foundation. It’s a loose powder that you dust over your skin and instantly you look awake, have coverage, and dare I say it, your skin becomes healthier. I would recommend going into a Bare Escentuals store to have your skin tone matched to the right shade of foundation. I almost bought the medium tone before a Bare Escentuals employee assured me I was meant to wear the fair tone. I my foundation every day and honestly believe my skin has become softer and more radiant. $25, bareescentuals.com

  7. blemishtherapy.jpg

    Bare Escentuals: RareMinerals BLEMISH THERAPY
This product is a miracle. I never had acne as a teenager but over the last year or so, I began to have small breakouts. I tried salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide products but they only made my outbreaks worse. The way I was piling that stuff on, I’m sure I was stripping my face of natural oils. After my success with the bareMinerals foundation I decided to shell out the cash for the RareMinerals Blemish Therapy. I brought it home, prayed to the pimple gods for it to work and lo and behold, it worked over night. Now, I’ve always been skeptical of people who say giddily about a product “it just worked over night,” but I can honestly say that for me, Blemish Therapy did. While salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide did not work for me, the sulfur in RareMinerals’ Blemish Therapy did, and I am forever grateful. $28, bareescentuals.com

  8. korresguava.jpg

    Korres GUAVA SHOWERGEL
I received a sample of this shower gel by being a Sephora Beauty Insider. I instantly fell in love with the scent and replaced my sample size product with a 13.53 oz. pump bottle. The clean scent makes my daily shower that much more relaxing. $20, sephora.com

  9. YesToShampoo.jpg

    Yes To Tomatoes SHAMPOO
At first, I wondered about saying yes to tomatoes in my hair. However, once I tried the shampoo, I was sold. The lather that this shampoo creates is comparable to expensive salon shampoos and you don’t have to sacrifice volume. The shampoo has a light feel to it, but I’ve found that this doesn’t stop it from being extremely moisturizing. $9, drugstore.com

  10. urbandecay.jpg

Urban Decay MIDNIGHT COWBOY RIDES AGAIN EYESHADOW
I’ve always been a fan of a girl having a little glitter in her life; this eye shadow is how it entered mine. I sported Midnight Cowboy all throughout high school and loved it. When Midnight Cowboy Rides again came out, I squealed with excitement. Sephora.com’s description of Midnight Cowboy is beige with silver glitter while Midnight Cowboy Rides again is described as beige with tons of silver glitter. And the tons of glitter has converted me into a MCRA wearer for life.
    $16, sephora.com

Over the years, a girl develops a list of her need-to-have products. Here are my absolute favorites!

Stasi, You Asked for It!: Michael Kors’s Spring ‘10 Runway Look

mkors2.jpgThe outlook for spring was pretty and fresh at Michael Kors, a welcome change from the decidedly Autumnal palette at other shows. Shiseido’s Artistic Director, Dick Page, transformed the models into lilac beauties! The look was “‘Statement Eyes,’ totally inspired by Michael Kors’ Spring 2010 collection.” To get the look, Dick used the Shiseido Accentuating Color Stick in Champagne Flush, and Rosy Flush as a wash to help the shadow stand out more when applied. Next, he used Accentuating Cream Eyeliner in black on both top and bottom lash lines. For color, he used Luminizing Satin Eye Color in Ocean Sunset from the Limited Edition Summer Makeup Collection in the inner corner of the eye toward the crease. Next he used Luminizing Satin Eye Color in Fondant from the upcoming Spring 2010 Makeup Collection, on the outer edge of the eye to the crease, concentrating the color on the middle of the eyelid. After that, he used the Limited Edition Luminizing Satin Eye Color in Amethyst over the black liner and worked up towards the outer points of the brows in a “V” shape, leaving the Fondant color to shine thorough. As a highlighter, Dick used the Luminizing Satin Face Color in Medusa on the brow bone. He finished off the eyes with Perfect Mascara in black on the top and bottom lashes. For the lips, Dick applied the new Perfect Rouge Tender Sheer in Pout from the Spring 2010 collection, and dusted it off with Luminizing Satin Face Color in Medusa for a lovely matte finish. I’m definitely feeling a lavender moment for spring!

DSquared2 + MAC = A Hot New Makeup Collection!

makeupWant a runway makeup look? DSquared2 has teamed up with MAC for a hot new makeup collection based off of the look from their Fall/Winter ‘09 runway show! Did you know: DSquared2 and MAC have a special bond because they’re both Canadian! The look is inspired by the undone glamour of Hollywood starlets like Lindsay Lohan and Mary-Kate and Ashley, complete with superdark shimmery black eye makeup. Dean Caten, one half of DSquared2 says, “Young Hollywood is about that, they don’t need to impress anyone, it’s cooler than being too studied. The same goes with the makeup, it isn’t about being perfect.” So don’t worry if you accidentally smudge your eyeliner! It just looks better the longer you leave it on and mess it. Sounds good to us!

Are you going to try it? Are you into that look? Sound off in the comments!
