SaraCate was in the sixth grade when she got her first pimple, and remembers the exact steps she took to combat her severe breakouts: “I used over-the-counter drugstore products: face washes, spot treatments, and toners,” she recalls. Then, she tried a spate of specialty brands. “None of them worked,” she says. “And some felt like they were burning my skin off!” So her mom took her to a dermatologist. “I was prescribed the oral antibiotic tetracycline and my acne cleared up right away,” says the Arkansas resident, now a college sophomore. But six months later, SaraCate’s skin was a different story: “The pimples came back worse than ever. I continued taking tetracycline until freshman year of college, but it never helped my skin again.”

Recently, some experts have been sounding the alarm that stubborn acne like SaraCate’s could in fact represent a larger scourge: the development of drug-resistant acne. Similar to MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, a type of staph that’s often found in hospitals and schools), this superstrain of acne occurs when bacteria that causes pimples (called P. acnes) becomes increasingly resistant to antibiotics. As with SaraCate’s situation, previously manageable pimples stop responding to prescription drugs, in some cases becoming more severe to boot.
