30 Days Of Mascara: Maybelline Pulse Perfection Vibrating

maybelline-pulse-perfection.jpg

My lash type: Long, slight curl, sparse
I tested: Maybelline Pulse Perfection Vibrating Mascara
Thoughts: As the #1 favorite mascara innovator, I knew Maybelline’s vibrating mascara would be a treat to test. However I, like Eva, was a little nervous about the idea of sticking a vibrating object near my eyes. Combine that with the fact that my early morning (afternoon, and evening for that matter) reflexes are less than cat-like, I braced myself for a messy trial.  Surprisingly, the low buzzing sound didn’t startle me into dropping the wand. I’m not crazy about the way the vibrations tickles my eyes, but I am crazy about the way my eyelashes looked. Seriously, dramatically long and lush! The formula contains thickening agents, emollient waxes, and film formers to make lashes look beefier than they are, while the vibrating brush works to separate them, add definition, and ensure that the product goes on evenly for a totally clump-free look. Maybelline claims that this magic wand will make your lashes appear 13 times thicker, and 75 percent longer, which after my test run and the fact that my eyelashes were literally flapping against my sunglass lenses, I can say it sounds about right.
Best For: Anyone who wants something a little more dramatic and intense! Great if mascara is the only product you like to wear. This one doesn’t add a ton of curl so you’ll want to pair it with an eyelash curler.
Buy it At: CVS for $15.

Beauty Crisis: Dark Under Eye Circles!

under-eye-circles-img.jpgKayle asks: “I was born with under eye dark circles, I’ve tried a lot of makeup products to cover them and I can’t find anything that works and looks natural. What do you suggest?”

Trying to find a concealer that actually covers up those dark circles can be tough, but luckily a few of our favorite makeup artists have weighed in on how to keep your eyes looking fresh!

Benefit Makeup Trend Artists Maggie and Annie Ford Danielson: “Under eye circles can be tricky, especially because blue and purple tones are some of the hardest things to conceal on the skin. When choosing a concealer for under the eyes, you want something that’s really creamy, camouflages darkness, lifts and brightens around the eyes. Having a slight melon tone to your concealer will balance those unwelcome dark shades that reside beneath the eye.  Try Benefit Erase Paste; a concentrated, creamy brightening concealer for eyes and face. Also, application is key. Use your finger and pat the product from the inside corner of the eye and out to give a smooth, natural coverage. You only need a little because too much concealer can actually bring focus to the under eye area.”

Senior National Makeup Artist Christina Choi of Bare Escentuals says, “Make sure you layer as you go. Avoid applying to much concealer under the eye area at one time. This can create a cakey look. It’s best to apply light layers and blend. When concealing under eye circles, Swirl, Tap, and Press SPF20 Multi-Tasking Concealer with the entire flat side of a concealing brush. Next, press the brush directly underneath the eye area down to the circumference of the orbital bone. Repeat and layer if you want more coverage. Apply a light layer of SPF20
Multi-Tasking Concealer on the inner corner of the eye blending towards the side of the nose using the concealer brush. Most people have dark shadows in this area of the face. You will immediately see brightness by concealing this particular area.”

Paul Innis, a makeup artist with Warren-Tricomi Artists Management, advises: “When using concealer under the eye you want to make sure the color is at least one to two shades lighter then your skin tone. If it is not lighter it will not lighten up the dark circles. It is typical for a girl with dark circles who has only used a concealer to end up with a gray color under the eyes. This is
primarily because the color is not rich enough. You need to find a basic concealer that is one to two shades lighter than the skin tone, and mix it with a very rich foundation.”

And Kimberly Saone, Manager of Artistry at Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, suggests: “Always start with an eye cream first to hydrate the eye area before applying concealer so it goes on smoothly and evenly. For extreme under eye darkness, start with a concealer that is pink or peach in color. Pink concealers help to brighten a dark blue or purple under-eye, and peach colored concealers brighten a green or gray under-eye. Once you have applied the pink or peach, layer concealer that matches your skin tone on top. Dust the under-eye with a sheer, pale yellow powder to help to set the product and make sure it doesn’t crease.”
