Mae asks: “I have a scar on my knee and I am desperate to get rid of it! What
should I do?”
Here, some of our favorite makeup artists and dermatologists share their tips on scar protection and coverage.
Beverly Hills dermatologist Stuart Kaplan, MD: “If the scar is elevated
or hard, a deep pressure massage of the area, done many times each day,
can sometimes break up the fibrous tissue that causes the scar tissue
to feel firmer than the surrounding skin. Topical silicone gels and
tapes (such as Silon or Kelocote) when used daily, can also diminish
scars. Dermablend make-up / concealer can hide scars. Lastly, laser
can improve the texture, elevation and discoloration associated with
scarring.”
New York City plastic surgeon Yael Halaas, MD: “If you have a scar
that’s been with you for a while, don’t despair. New treatments can go
a long way toward erasing the past. Laser technology has improved
dramatically. We can now treat elevated, red, or pigmented scars as
well as post surgical and burn scars. Lasers essentially work by
sending pulses of light at highly specific cells without damaging the
surrounding skin. When those targeted cells regenerate, they form fresh
collagen. Lasers are like smart bombs in skin. You can target a
blood vessel or age spot or tattoo just by altering the type of light and delivery method.”
Leading New York City cosmetic dermatologist Macrene Alexiades, MD: “A
great product used in physicians’ offices (and available for purchase
online) is called Neova Matrix AR. Made with a patented active retinol
technology, Neova Matrix AR renews skin. It is used to clear up acne,
minimize wrinkles and for the improvement of scars in as little as 14
days without the irritation commonly experienced with topical
retinol-based prescription-strength products.”
Make up artist Meli Pennington: “If the scar is fresh, it’s really
important to use sunscreen to keep it from darkening permanently. That
can make a huge difference. On a fixed scar, a waterproof concealer
like Dermablend works best. Use a color that matches the leg skintone,
and apply plenty of concealer to cover. Then take a makeup sponge and
pat it lightly on the concealer, to blend it into the surrounding skin
and take off excess. Then powder the concealer. If it’s too light you
can brush a little bronzing powder over the concealer, especially as
summer arrives and legs are a little more tan.”

The first thing that most people realize when they come to my apartment is that I’m a sucker for a beautifully scented candle. I literally have about 15 candles in my apartment at any given time! (The second thing people realize is that I have a shoe problem. My closet is overflowing with shoes). My latest obsession is Linnea’s Lights, a small company based in Indiana that handpours eco-friendly candles. I love the vintage look! My favorite scent is Tuberose, a super-girly white floral. To find a store near you linneaslights.com (or candlesoffmain.com if you’re a web-shopper like me!).

I am totally creepy on Erin Wasson and her awesomeness. She always manages to exude total cool and laid back
beauty
that I can really identify with. I’m enjoying her outfit in this photo
because of it’s classic summer appeal: cut offs, a white button down,
and sweet shoes. Her look is unfussy and simple, which is something
that’s always “on trend,” and always a good look in my book. What do
you guys think?

My lash type: Normal with medium length and thickness
I tested: Avon’s SuperCurlacious Mascara
Thoughts: This super handy mascara gives your lashes a delightful natural curl! I think the brush is one of its best features. It’s slightly curved to perfectly fit the shape of your eye and the fine plastic molded bristles leave your lashes clump-free. The mascara itself is also filled with curling polymers that assist in the lifting effect. Flexibility isn’t necessarily something that I would think of when looking for a great mascara, but I actually noticed the difference between this mascara and others that I have tried. You know when your mascara is so heavy you can actually see your eyelashes in your peripheral vision? You don’t get that stiff heavy look or feeling that many types of mascara bring about. My lashes feel practically mascara-less to the touch and Curlacious! A quick tip from the pros: “to maximize lash curl hold the brush to your lashes for an additional three seconds after applying.”
Best for: Girls with medium to longer lashes who want a lighter look and a clump-free curl. This is also great for sensitive eyes because it’s hypoallergenic and ophthalmologist tested.
Buy it at: avon.com in September 2009 for $8
