Star-Spotting: We Interviewed Julianne Hough!

JHough-interview.jpg

We all know Julianne best from Dancing With the Stars, and we watched as she danced her way to the top, not once but twice! Already a seasoned dancer at the age of 21, Julianne has recently decided to fulfill her dreams as a singer and actress too. Talk about a true triple threat! With her infectious, bubbly personality, Julianne doesn’t let her hectic career tire her out. Read on to find out how she keeps up her look in our interview.

What is your beauty regimen?
My everyday wake up routine is pretty normal. I brush my teeth, wash my face, and put on a little makeup.

What are your must have products, and what are your favorite summer products?
I love to use Armani foundation, L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara, and Rosebud Lip Balm.  Nothing too fancy! I always shave my legs with Venus Embrace and the Pantene Ro-V 5 Minute Strengthening Mask is great after a swim.

Who are your favorite designers?
I don’t really have a favorite designer because I don’t necessarily shop by brand. I like to save money, and shop at normal places like Forever 21 and Anthropologie. There is also this new designer that I really like called Ever. You should check them out!

Summer Hair Care Tips from Naomi Knights

summer-hair-img.jpgSummer is the best! When the weather turns sunny, you can bet I’m
spending 90% of my free time outdoors. BBQ’s, and swimming pools, here
I come! The only thing (besides mosquitoes) that stinks about
summertime though is the damage all that chlorine and sunshine can do
to your hair. But if there’s one person I can think of who knows the
ins and outs of hair chemistry, it’s Naomi Knights, colorist at ION
Studio
in New York. I turned to her for some tips to keep your locks
lush all summer long.

“The first thing that comes to mind when it comes to masks you can do
yourself is an avocado mask. It’s extremely nourishing and that’s
exactly what the hair needs after a summer of fun! I find the most
simple method is avocado and olive oil. I usually do about 2-3
tablespoons of olive oil per avocado. It’s especially nice if you heat
the olive oil before mixing it with the avocado. Apply to dry hair and
leave for 20-30 minutes then shampoo off with a delicate shampoo and a
nourishing conditioner.  Avocado is very high in fatty acids and a good
source of vitamin D and Potassium, and olive oil will help keep the
shine in your hair!

If your scalp is sensitive from the sun, you can add a few drops of a
calendula or chamomile essential oil for soothing purposes. Do be
careful of certain essential oils like tea tree on sun sensitive scalps
as they can be a bit too stimulating. If you decide you want to use
essential oils add a little jojoba oil to the mix because it helps
carry the oils into your scalp gently.

When going into the ocean water or a swimming pool you want to be sure
to use a silicone or oil-based product on your hair for protection as
these separate from water and can help prevent the penetration of the
chlorine and dehydration of the salt.

The whole Davines Su line has something for every hair type as far as
protection is concerned. It’s really important to use a more nourishing
shampoo and conditioner like the one in SU after the sun to replace
your hair’s natural elements.I also try to get all my clients to come
in for a Detox treatment before and after the summer time to protect
their hair. The mud really absorbs any unwanted excess on the hair and
the shampoo helps to control chlorine while the conditioner prevents
future penetration of such environmental damages.”

I went in not too long ago for the Detox treatment, and it was
incredible! It’s literally like a facial mud mask for your hair. It
draws out any impurities, either due to product overload, pollution, or
hard water, and makes your hair look much brighter, kind of like you
just had it colored. It’s amazing what builds up in your strands over
time!

Bronzer Tips from the Pro!

bronzer-tips-img.jpgSpring has finally sprung! And it’s time to trade in your winter makeup
for summer shades and bronzer. I LOVE bronzer–personally, I think that
with a little mascara or gloss it’s all you need–but application can be
tricky. So I asked makeup artist Jenna Menard how to choose the right
type, and then how to apply it: “First, decide what kind of bronze you
are going for-if it’s that dewy glow, you will be in the market for a
cream or gel bronzer, if it’s a no shimmer bronze, you will want powder
with no shimmer or sparkle, and if it’s the glow, but not the dew look,
then that would be a powder bronzer with a hint of fine shimmer not
hard sparkle. For a cream or gel, I like Laura Mercier Bronzing Gel or
Nars The Multiple Bronzer. For a powder bronzer without any shimmer I
use Benefit Hoola or Shu Uemura Bronzing Powder. For something with
sparkle, I like Physician’s Formula or Cargo Bronzer.

When applying bronzer, keep in mind it’s not a blush! Think of it as a
way to warm your skin tone all around. Start right below the cheek bone
working your way back close to the hair line towards the temples, and
then up to the top of the forehead. Then go back and dust the apples of
your cheek, like you would with blush to blend the color evenly. After
most of the color is applied from the brush on to the forehead and
cheeks, take your brush and lightly dust the rest of the face to blend
the left over color into the skin. Remember, more product should not be
applied to the brush before you go over the rest of your face; start
subtle and work your way up. No need to over-apply the color right off
the bat… Take your time to achieve your ultimate bronzed look!”

30 Days of Mascara: CoverGirl LashExact

cg-lash-exact-img.jpgMy lash type: Long, slight curl, sparse
I tested: CoverGirl LashExact
Thoughts: I am officially in love with this mascara! My eyelashes look defined and darker, but super super natural. There’s not a hint of clump ANYWHERE–it looks like I’m not wearing any mascara at all, and that I was blessed with perky feathery lashes. This patent-pending brush features wonderful purple rubbery spikes instead of synthetic hairs, and while I was skeptical at first that they would actually separate my lashes, I’m a total convert. The bristles are actually placed and spaced just so to glide smoothly past each, individual lash, and each brush is made in the same mold to ensure every single one features the perfectly placed and ordered spikes. I’m a big fan of subtle lashes, so this is definitely one I’m going to want to hang on to.
Best for: Girls with naturally long lashes.. this one doesn’t lengthen or curl. Also great for those who like to keep things pretty simple and natural-looking.
Buy it at: CVS for $8.

Pop Question: To Squeeze Or Not To Squeeze Pimples?

clear-skin-model.jpgSimplegoesxx, you asked: How can I get rid of pimples that are under the surface of the skin and how can I prevent pimples that I feel coming on (I get one like clock work at a certain time of the month) from surfacing?

Here’s a response from my dermatologist, Dr. Amy Wechsler (dramywechsler.com): “This is a tough one because those pimples are often cystic and do not have a connection to the surface–do not try to pop them as it could leave scarring! Under the surface pimples often need a dermatologist’s help. If you don’t have one or can’t go, apply an ice pack and 1% hydrocortisone cream on a Q-tip. These kinds of pimples are usually caused by hormones–going on the pill helps to prevent them!”

From my personal experience, Simplegoesxx, Evening Primrose Oil (taken orally, about 2 capsules a day, every day!) helps to stabilize hormone levels (ask your doctor before taking them though, to make sure they won’t react to anything else you’re on). Wait about 3 weeks… You’ll see a difference!
