Welcome to day one of Teen Vogue’s 30 Days of Mascara Countdown!!! I conceived this crazy idea (by the end of it, my lashes will be exhausted) when Elia from Houston emailed me to ask what mascaras I typically use. Truth be told, I use whatever comes across my desk. I’m not as slavishly devoted to ONE mascara as most girls are! Which, in this case, is a good thing, since I (along with the entire beauty team, interns and all!) can share my discoveries with you guys! So… Here goes!

My lash type: fine, straight, and sparse (sigh)
I tested: L’Oreal Bare Naturale Mascara
Thoughts: LOVED this mascara! It’s great for girls who want definition and super natural (or, I suppose, Naturale lol) enhancement. This is not one of those super-dramatic, over-the-top gloopy formulas that gives a Britney Spears-Paris Hiltony look (thank goodness!). You’ll get pretty doe eyes and–thanks to the mineral-enriched, 86% natural formula (that’s also paraben- and fiber-free)–when you take it off, you don’t feel as though your lashes are worse for the wear.
Best for: girls with fine, straight lashes like me (it won’t straighten out curled lashes) or those who wear contacts or have sensitive eyes–it’s been ophthalmologist-tested.
Buy it at: a drugstore near you, pronto, for $10.

To kick off our 30 Days of Mascara extravaganza I caught up with Francesca Roman, resident makeup wizard at Butterfly Studio Salon, and mascara enthusiast for a lesson on how to lash-out like a pro. Francesca, who loves L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara, YSL Luxurious Mascara, and Clinique Naturally Glossy, says that proper application starts with how you open the tube: “Do not pump the wand in and out of the tube! Every time you pump, air will get into the tube causing mascara to dry up and attach to the wand in a clumpy fashion. Simply dip once and apply one coat on each eye. When applying, make sure to go as close to the root of the lash as possible and carefully wiggle the wand to help separate and lift the lashes. Keep in mind that by applying the mascara as close to the root as possible, it will give the impression of eyeliner without having to apply any! Work back and forth, from eye to eye, but don’t re-dip the wand. Be sure to apply any additional coats with a light hand.”
