Though by now we all know that sunscreen should be every girl’s #1 summer product, we’re all human and the occasional burn is inevitable. And so long as you don’t wind up looking like Kim Kardashian in that terrifying photo, it’s excusable. And with summer fun finally kicking up, I turned to facialist guru Sharon Decker for her tips on how to avoid feeling the burn.
“First, apply Aloe Vera to help soothe the skin and avoid peeling. It’s best to use the Aloe Vera plant itself (you can find leaves at most health food stores).” Side note: there are also a lot of good gels out there. I really like Epicuren’s Aloe Vera Calming Gel, FYI. “Also, make sure to drink lots of water to avoid dehydration. Apply a cool compress to your sunburned skin for at least 20 minutes three or four times daily. Do not use ice directly on the skin! A pack of frozen veggies will do the trick. You can also dip a cotton ball in cold raw milk and apply it to your burn. Don’t use skim milk, because it’s the fat present in raw milk that helps to soothe the skin.” Finally and most importantly, “Do NOT peel your skin! And from now on, apply at least SPF 30 daily, or SPF 45 for a fair complexion.”
