20 Questions with Tennis Pro Anna Chakvetadze!

FILA-anna-chakvetadze.jpgAt 22, tennis player Anna Chakvetadze has already placed in the top-five worldwide players, played in the US Open, and won the Kremlin Cup in her hometown, Moscow. This girl is seriously talented! Now, she’s sponsored by Fila (which means LOTS of super cute tennis dresses) and she’s fighting her way back to a spot at the top. We caught up with Anna to chat about her goals, training schedule and her signature long hair!

1) When did you know you wanted to be a tennis player?
I knew I wanted to be a tennis player when I was about 14-15 years old. I didn’t start taking tennis seriously as a possible profession until then, as I was playing other sports and going to school full time. Tennis was just an after school activity until I was around 14 years old!

2) What’s the best part of your job?
I love being with Fila! I was so excited when my agent told me they were interested in having me endorse the brand. Fila is a classic tennis brand that has a rich history in tennis.  It’s fun to be the face of a big company like Fila! My former clothing company was too big and I was just one of many girls all wearing the same product. At Fila, I get to be more of an individual.

3) What’s your on the court style?
I love all the Fila on-court tennis dresses. Not only are they comfortable to wear, but they are also really nice-looking! I feel confident that not only can I win matches but will also look attractive. Probably on-court my style staple is my ponytail. I haven’t cut my hair in 5 years and it’s pretty long. The ponytail flies around when I’m playing and once even got caught in my racquet.

4) What about off the court?
Off-court I like to be comfortable and usually just wear jeans.

5) What are your favorite wins?
My favorite championship is the US Open, because I have played well in New York and I love the city. However, my favorite tournament is the Kremlin Cup in my home, Moscow. I never felt better than when I won the Kremlin Cup in 2007 in front of my friends and family.

TV Stars in NYC For Upfronts and Free Clothes!

Every spring, tv actors and actress swarm NYC for Upfronts, a week of press events and gift suites (read: free clothes and goodies!), to show off their new tv shows. Cool, right? It totally worked out well for the cast of Gossip Girl, who film in NYC and thus are already here! Eric Van Der Woodsen, mean girl Hazel, and “Aunt Carol” from the now-defunct GG 80’s spin-off (or rather, their real life counterparts, Connor Paolo, Dreama Walker, and Krysten Ritter) rolled up to the W Hotel to pick up some cute House of Kilroy tees (see: Connor), Radley leather bags (see: Dreama), Emu boots, Vans flip flops (they make flip-flops now, apparently!), and Shop the Look jewelry. Plus, the Humane Society was there too, getting celebs to sign pledges to end seal hunting. Shopping, celebs, and a good cause all in one place? Not a bad deal!

Any Prom Stragglers Out There?

<a href=”http://www.teenvogue.com/beauty/blogs/beauty/gloria-b-tv-prom-img.html”><img src=”http://www.teenage.me/wp-content/plugins/wp-o-matic/cache/c8371_gloria-b-tv-prom-img-thumb-233×139.jpg” alt=”gloria-b-tv-prom-img.jpg” class=”mt-image-none” style=”" height=”139″ width=”233″ />If so, you’ll want to watch our amazing fashion director, Gloria Baume, and Herbal Essences hairstylist Charles Baker-Strahan on Fox 5!  And if you like the looks, here’s a treat for you… I got Charles to spill a step-by-step guide on how to get each look. Enjoy!

“Healthy, hydrated hair is the perfect foundation to set any style (similar to how you apply a moisturizer to set your makeup!), so I used Herbal Essences Hydralicious on all three girls!” explains Charles.

To get Gaby’s rocker look:

  • I prepped her hair with Herbal Essences Hydralicious Self-Targeting shampoo and conditioner.
  • To keep the edgy feeling and natural texture in this style, I rough-dried the hair with mousse and my hands (instead of using a brush and a blowdryer).
  • On each side of the head, I rubbed my palm against the scalp to create a natural lift, which adds just a bit of glamour, so that the look still has a dressed feeling.
  • To smooth any flyways and protect the hair, I used a split end protector and created “Pretty Dreadlocks” and Patty-cake waves to add visual texture to the hair.
  • To create a pretty dreadlock, twist a strand of hair and backcomb the twist with a flat iron by clamping sections as you move up the strand.
  • To create a patty cake curl, twist a strand of hair around two fingers and squeeze the curl together with the flat iron (like a Panini press).

To get Keren’s romantic look:

  • I used Herbal Essences Hydralicious Featherweight shampoo and conditioner to start.
  • After washing, I used a diffuser to boost her natural movement and wave and a spray gel to give as much volume as I could get on her hair.
  • Then I set her wave on a 3/4″ inch barrel curling iron by wrapping the sections a few inches from the scalp and allowing them to fall naturally, playing up the romance of the dress.
  • I opened up her face by pulling a small, soft strand from each side away from the hairline and tying a soft knot in the back with them (I then secured the extra pieces with a hairpin).

To get Michelle’s glam look:

  • To soften her curls and protect against frizz, I used Herbal Essences Hydralicious Self-Targeting shampoo and conditioner to prep her hair.
  • This was the most traditional prom look, but I still wanted it to feel natural.
  • I diffused her curly hair then perfected the curl with a curling iron-choose a size based on how tight you want the curls to be.
  • I loosely pulled it into a low side ponytail and backcombed roughly to create texture and pinned the ponytail into a bun on top of itself.
  • I left soft curls cascading around the face and worked a few pieces towards the back towards the bun.
  • I set the style in place with light hold hairspray.
