Crystal asks: “What is the best way to work with short, fine lashes?”
Having long, luscious lashes is sadly not something we’re all blessed with… but luckily there are some great products out there that can help make your eyes pop! We’ve asked some of our favorite makeup artists for their best tips to make your lashes appear full and voluminous.
Makeup artist Emily Kate Warren suggests using Maybelline Lash Discovery Mascara. “Use Lash Discovery to work up into the lash roots and get the tiny hard-to-reach lashes. Layer a lengthening or volumizing mascara like L’Oreal Lash Out on top.”
MAX Factor celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey swears by MAX Factor’s 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper: “The big brush grabs every lash, even the little ones, and coats them with the product precisely. The formula increases the thickness of lashes up to 200% versus bare lashes.”
Creator & CEO of Tarte Cosmetics Maureen Kelly recommends Bottoms Up Lower Lash Mascara: “You can get the tiniest of lashes without getting mascara on your face!” She also loves Lights, Camera, Lashes!, a 4-in-1 mascara (lengthening, curling, volumizing, and conditioning) which she says is clinically proven to increase the appearance of lash curl by 90.2%!
Napoleon Perdis says, “To achieve fuller, longer lashes, look to particular mascara formulas, wands, and special features, like color. He suggests first applying Napoleon Perdis Peep Show in Madame Prep (a primer). “Not to prime is a crime!” he says. “Follow this application with Madame Curl Curl to lengthen and lift lashes. To really set yourself apart, apply Colored Lash Patrol Mascara to the tips of lashes.”
Erin McCarthy, Education Manager of MAKE UP FOR EVER, says: “To give the illusion of a full lash line, it’s best to use a thickening mascara most concentrated right at the base of the lashes. The blacker the lashes are at the lash line, the fuller they will appear. Aqua Smoky Lash mascara is great because it’s blacker than most mascaras and gives a 3D effect of volume, length, and curl. Lift at the brow to get the brush as close to the lash line as possible, move the brush from side to side so the product catches between the lashes. Apply two coats of mascara to the lash line before bringing the brush up through the length of the lashes. The result will be thicker, longer-looking lashes that will make the eyes really stand out!”

Being a complete germaphobe, I typically go through a bottle of hand soap every few weeks. The first thing I do when I get home is wash my hands. Touch a piece of chicken while cooking? Wash my hands. Pick up a pair of shoes off the floor? Wash my hands. You get the drift, pretty much just EXISTING on a second-to-second basis requires a handwash or two.
I recently tried out a new brand of hand soap called FURTHER. It’s GREAT! Why, you might be asking? Let me count the ways!
- it smells delish (Bergamot, Olive, and grassy)
- it leaves hands soft and smooth (thanks to the veg oils in the formula)
- AND the couple that creates it is SUPER eco–bio-diesel fueled cars and all!!

With Gap’s first signature scent for women launching tomorrow, I caught
up with Patrick Robinson, Gap’s amazingly cool and down to earth
Executive Vice President of Design to chat about the fragrance, a
seriously exciting upcoming collaboration, and his dreams of being a
gardener!
1. Did you always know you wanted to work in fashion?
Until I was about 14 I actually wanted to be a doctor. I got interested
in fashion because of surfing-I actually started out making board
shorts!
2. If you weren’t in fashion now, what do you think you would want to do? Would you still want to be a doctor?
No, I think I would want to do something fun-something where you’re
outside a lot and working a lot with your hands. I think I would be a
good gardener!
3. What advice do you have for the next generation of kids getting started in fashion?
Learn your craft and enjoy it. Really learn how to make clothes and enjoy the process.
4. Would you ever want try your own line again?
I found such a good home at GAP, I love the size of the company, and
that it’s everywhere. It’s amazing when you get to see what you do have
an impact in very big ways. And working with GAP is great too because
you get to work with people like Pierre Hardy and Alexander Wang. We
have Alexander Wang doing the next CFDA collaboration, like what we did
with the white shirts last year, only this year it’s with khaki. He did
this incredible motorcycle jacket in khaki that’s going to be under
$100. It’s coming out on June 16th, so get ready!
5. If you were to bring back your own line, what do you imagine it would look like?
Affordable. It would look very expensive, but be very affordable.
