Girl of the Week: Sophie Mawson

xrde115_snapshot.jpgAGE: 15
HOMETOWN: Lincolnshire, England

WHAT SHE’S WEARING: “I’m wearing a Topshop jacket and skirt, a Topman cardigan, and a Miss Selfridge shirt. You can’t see my shoes in this picture, but they’re just plain black lace ups from ASOS. Though it might be odd to buy an item of clothing from a men’s fashion store, I think it’s a good way to find some good stuff - particularly oversized things. It’s easier to just buy something that is actually just too big for you!”

LEATHER LUXE: “The jacket that I’m wearing in this picture is quite a recent purchase, and currently I’m wearing it most days. It’s good because I can wear it with just about anything - I can dress all in black for a ‘tough’ look, or pair it with a pretty dress for a good contrast which makes an outfit much more interesting.”

FEELING THE VIBE: “Music influences my style a lot. I’m currently listening to Cake Bake Betty, Jedi Mind Tricks, Bob Marley, Lykke Li, and Yann Tiersen. If I’m listening to something pretty or relaxing while getting dressed, I might put on a floaty dress or a floral skirt, but if I’m listening to something hip hop or electro, I might put on skinny jeans and chunky heels. I’m also influenced by fashion blogs, and websites such as lookbook.nu. I find that seeing people’s personal styles is so much more interesting than seeing what a celebrity is wearing after being dressed by a professional stylist.”

IN THE BLOGOSPHERE: “In my spare time I like to watch television and go to the beach with friends. I also like to read - I’m currently reading A Tale of Two Cities. And, of course, I like to read fashion magazines and follow fashion blogs. I have a blog of my own, where I post my own outfits as well as inspiration. Fashion blogs are great for inspiration!”

ONE DAY AT A TIME: “I don’t think anybody’s style can be summed up in a few sentences - everybody’s style changes from day to day and season to season. One day I might be wearing a red skirt and ballet pumps, and the next I could be all in black, with super skinny jeans and lots of necklaces piled on top of each other. Even though my style changes, I think it’s always quite simple - I don’t like to have too many different colors or shapes in one outfit.”

AGAINST THE TRENDS: “I’m not sure what trends I’ve actually liked, to be honest. I hated the ‘new rave’ phase - neon legwarmers are the tackiest things ever!”
