Dress? Check. Shoes? Check. Bag? Check. Hair? NOT check! Figuring out how to wear your hair for prom seems to confound even the chicest Teen Vogue readers. With that in mind, Redken Session Stylist Giovanni Giuntoli shared his top three looks for prom. Hopefully, you’ll be inspired!
Long, Loose Bohemian Waves
Hey Upper East-Siders, want to get Blake Lively’s full worn-in waves and be the gossip of the night? First, prep and protect hair from heat by applying Redken fabricate 03 heat-active texturizer ($14) on damp or dry hair and blow-dry in sections with a round brush to create volume. Then work a little Redken rough paste 12 working material ($17) between your palms and apply evenly to hair for that ragged texture, starting at the crown. Randomly curl sections of hair with a 11â¿¿2 inch curling iron, alternating direction of the curls. After curling entire head, rub a little more rough paste 12 through the curls to break up and loosen them up. It’ll create that finger-smudged silhouette with edges that aren’t super clean and polished, for a beautiful bohemian understatement.

Whether you’d like to work on the sets of major Hollywood films or backstage at Fashion Week, leading celebrity hairstylist Diana Schmidtke’s new book, Shortcuts, is giving all you future beauty professionals out there a valuable gift– a book filled with her own personal experiences and detailed advice to help make your dreams come true in this super competitive industry!
1. You’ve already worked with an impressive number of celebrities in show business. Is there anyone that you would like to work with whom you haven’t yet?
Absolutely! It’s difficult to narrow it down to one person, but if I had to choose somebody that I could work with tomorrow, I would choose President Barack Obama.
2. When did you discover that you wanted a career in the beauty industry?
It was actually an evolutionary process that began when I was 18 years old. (My mom, however, will tell you it started in 4th grade when my teacher confiscated my comb during class.) For me, I remember the journey starting when my hairdresser asked me to be his hair model at the Midwest Beauty Show in Chicago. Throughout the day, I had an opportunity to walk around the convention and talk to people about their careers. On the drive home, I decided I wanted to use my creativity to make people feel good about themselves. I immediately enrolled in beauty school.
3. Do you think this is a skill that successful beauty professionals are born with or is it one that can to be cultivated and perfected?
I’ve seen both types of artists be very successful. I’m not a natural born artist. I attended many classes on both hair and make-up even after graduating beauty school. Even now as an educator, I continue to take the time to hone my skills.
4. How can young men and women who are aspiring to work in the beauty industry
begin their journey?
Knowledge and passion are the keys to success in this career. Only when you understand how the industry works, can you direct your passion and learn how to make it work for you.
5. When did you get your big break?
I believe that luck is a combination of preparation and readiness. For three years, I went to the library every week researching movies, art, and fashion. The Internet didn’t exist as it does today! And just when I was ready to throw in the towel, and move back to Chicago, I met a freelance artist named Marvin at my going away party. Because he was not one of the invited guests, I introduced myself, which led to a conversation about my dream. I explained my story and shared my dream of becoming a signed freelance hair and make-up artist with the Celestine Agency, to which he replied, “I am an artist signed by the Celestine Agency.” I was floored!! I have been an artist with the Celestine Agency for the last 10 years.
