Born with super stick straight and fine hair, I always loved the look of dreads (seriously!) and braids. I envied my friends from high school who rocked them (meanwhile, of course, they told me they wanted my hair!). Recently, “Best of Boston 2008″ salon owner, Nicholas Penna Jr., of SalonCapri in Newton Highlands/Hyde Park, MA sent me some tips on how to create temporary dreadlocks… My hair is too short to try this out now, but maybe one day!!
- Create Dreadlocks (the easy way!):
- Section off hair into half-inch sized sections
- Apply a wax to the section of hair
- Using a comb, tease the root area of the hair
- Spray with a light hairspray
- Use a flat iron to hold the hair in place and move it up and down to create a “dreadlock” look

I can still clearly remember wearing traditional metal braces throughout junior high, and all of the hassles that came with it: Having to stick a gob of wax at the ends of the wires, so they wouldn’t poke me on the insides of my cheeks; regularly changing the rubber bands that linked my top and bottom braces; heading straight to the bathroom after lunch to make sure there were no unsightly food bits stuck in the metal hardware. That’s why I’m admittedly jealous that teens today can straighten their teeth without the use of any wires, rubber bands, and wax, thanks to Invisalign. And now, the company that made metal braces a thing of the past has created a system designed just for teens. These new teen-targeted aligners are shaped in such a way that new teeth can grow in, and it won’t mess up the straightening process. Plus, a blue dot located on the back of the aligners is designed to fade over a two-week period if they are worn properly, so you, your parents, or your orthodontist can check to see if you’re wearing them as often as you should. The best part about Invisalign, of course, is the fact that you can remove the aligners for special occasions (Prom, Graduation anyone?), so you can start straightening your teeth at anytime. For more info on Invisalign Teen and how to find an orthodontist near you who is a trained Invisalign Teen provider, visit www.invisalign.com/teen.
