Get the Look: Matthew Williamson S/S ‘09

bty-matthew-will.jpgBackstage at the Matthew Williamson Spring/Summer show, lead makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury described the beauty look she created as “lived-in, effortlessly cool, rock ‘n roll”, and she was spot-on. If you think going for an edgy, smoky eye takes too much effort, think again: The key to achieving this look is to not aim for perfection. You’ll end up with a better result that way, plus application will take less than five minutes from start to finish. Follow these tips and make a strong beauty statement for Spring!

Here’s how MAC Senior Artist John Stapleton executed Charlotte’s vision:

  • Start with clean skin, as the look is meant to be fresh and raw. Dot a little concealer only under eyes and around the nose to combat redness.
  • Lightly powder the center of the face.
  • With MAC Hodgepodge lip pencil, dot a spray of freckles across the nose. Be cautious not to overdo it.
  • For the slept-in smoky eye, use MAC Dark Brown Cream Color Base and Smolder eye pencil. Mix together and apply with a firm brush, starting close to the root of the lashes and blending upward. Also apply under the eyes as well. (For the runway show, Charlotte patted a little Vaseline on the eyelids and under the eyes to give them a subtle sheen.)
  • The cream will crease, which gives eyes that lived-in look. Leave it alone!
  • Apply lip conditioner to make lips soft and supple.

Here’s how lead hair stylist Paul Hanlon created the simple yet sexy ‘do:

  • On damp hair, apply a leave-in conditioner.
  • Straighten hair with a flat iron.
  • From the middle of the hair shaft to the ends, apply an oil serum to provide separation. Don’t brush, comb, or work the hair too much.

Beauty Crisis: How to Update Long, Curly Hair!

lob-cut.jpg

Question: “I  have brown naturally curly hair that is a little longer than my shoulders, and I wanted to try something new with my look. What I should do?” -Emily

Teen Vogue’s answer: I feel your pain! Having naturally curly hair, it can feel impossible to shake things up and try something new. Go too short, and you wind up with the triangle hair–not cute. Wait for it to grow and, well, what’s the fun in that? Lately though, the hottest style is a blunt, shoulder length bob, or “lob”, which thankfully works both curly and straight! The look, as rocked by Anne Hathaway and Gwyneth Paltrow, is “is very popular right now because it puts a modern twist on the classic bob,” says top stylist Roman Kusayev of Butterfly Salon in New York.

Fekkai celeb stylist Adir Abergel, who apparently coined the look “the lob,” says: “This is a great length that gives you a specific stylized cut but still lets you play with different updo’s and textures. The length should just hit your shoulder blades at the longest point and graze the tops of shoulders at its shortest,” explains Abergel. “Make sure your stylist understands that you want the layers to be a bit more choppy than perfectly graduated layers. This will give the cut a more funky vibe.”

Be sure to go in to the salon ready with photographs of the style you want, and prepared to tell the stylist precisely what you want. “To avoid a pyramid shape,” notes celeb stylist Richard Marin, “cut your hair with a slight layer in the face frame area anywhere from the bottom of your lip to your hair length. This gives your hair a swingy motion that’s always cool, and gives an elongated shape to curly hair.”

To style your new ‘do, try Kerastase Oleo Curl to define curls and protect against humidity, or
Fekkai’s Oceanic to lend texture, and a carefree, beachy feel. Stylist Jessica Tingley from the Serge Normant at John Frieda Salon in LA recommends applying a small amount of deep conditioner as a styling creme. “It will absorb into the hair, moisturize, and help calm frizz.” If you want to rock the look straight, try using a blend of Shu Uemura Silk Oil and Satin Design. “The mix will help hair look and stay silky smooth and tame frizz from the summer heat,” says Kusayev. Finish with the Remington Wet 2 Straight iron, which dries and straightens your hair in no time, and will give you a sleek, chic, blunt look.
