I’m sure most of you lovely ladies have heard of the Iron Man triathlons–I have a few friends who do triathlons (none who do the Iron Man though!!) and I’m always SO impressed to hear about their training. For me, at least, it’s all about baby steps. I try to work out three times a week, but lately it’s been plateau-ing around two times a week. eek! With that in mind, I asked Judy Molnar, a USA Triathlon Level 1 Certified Coach and vice president of Iron Girl, for some tips on how to stay motivated when it comes to exercise…
Getting Started
- Start some nightly walks with your mom, a friend, or neighbor. Make a commitment to meet 1 to 3 times a week to walk the neighborhood by starting out with 15 minutes and add 2 to 5 minutes to your walk each week.
Motivation
- Charity makes a difference when it comes to motivation to walk. Check out the local charity walks in your community; it’s a great place to start your fitness from the couch while building up to something like a 5K.
Music
- Create and download your person 5K fitness playlist. Music is great for motivation when you are out for a run or walk. Or, plug into a favorite celebrities music playlist.
Keep a Record of Achievements
- Journal electronically by keeping track on your iPod with a variety of fitness apps. There are many programs and platforms available to download to your iPod to keep your fitness goals on track while also making it a lot of fun.
Keep Proper Perspective
- Build up your goals one step at a time. Considering running or walking a marathon over several months. Do a few miles a week and add up your totals at the end of the week. When you get to 23.1 miles do the last 3.1 miles at your local 5K. Call it a progression to a marathon over time!

During a meeting with celebrity manicurist Jenna Happ the other day, I bemoaned my lack of skills when it comes to doing my own nails at home. (I always end up doing a shoddy job: I get polish on the skin around the nail bed, and I somehow manage to bump at least two still-wet nails against a table or a mug, forcing me to re-do them all over again.) She assured me that all hope is not lost and gave me these quick fix tips to try:
- If you get nail polish on the skin surrounding the nail, you don’t have to use a Q-tip (or cuticle stick, or whatever) dipped in polish remover to get rid of it. (If you accidentally touch the nail with even a little polish remover, it’s game over and you’ll have to re-do that nail.) Instead, put a tiny dab of top coat over the wayward polish, then simply rub it off. “It’s almost like the top coat reactivates the polish, making it easy to remove,” says Happ.
- If you get a small nick or smudge on a freshly polished nail, Orly’s Smudge Fixer will save the day. Just apply it over the nicked nail immediately and it’ll smooth out the polish, restoring an evenly lacquered look.
