Sally Hansen nail expert Dana Caruso recently gave me a step-by-step nail session filled with lots of advice on how to give yourself a quick and easy color job. Follow the steps below for a DIY professional-looking manicure!
1. Dab nails with a polish remover soaked cotton ball.
Why? It’s incredibly important to cleanse the nail bed before applying any color. Any residual oils on your nails will cause the polish to not adhere as well as it should.
2. Gently rub nails all over with a buffer block.
Why? A buffer block will create a matte nail surface, which is the ideal base for color adhesion.
3. Rub on a dab of cuticle treatment and push cuticles back.
Why? Cutting your cuticles can weaken your nail bed and lead to infections.
4. File nails into a fashionable “squoval” (not too square, not too oval) shape.
Why? The “squoval” nail shape tends to be very strong and resistant to breakage. To keep nails at their strongest, file nails only in one direction when using a rough-grit. But if you are using a very fine-grit file, then it is ok to file back and forth.
5. Apply a base coat, two thin coats of color and a topcoat.
Why? This nail preserving strategy provides the best-looking color with the most amount of protection for your nails.

I handle all of the schedules and tickets for all of the editors here at Seventeen, so when those invites come in it’s my job to sort them and make sure we RSVP to every single one!
