My Transformation at the Valery Joseph Salon

valery-joseph-laurell-img.jpg

To say that I neglected my hair for the past few months would be a major understatement. So when I stepped in to the Valery Joseph Salon on the Upper East Side last week for a Hair Painting treatment, I was eager to see some improvement in my look!

Their colorist, Mazza, who has been handpainting highlights for 8 years, transformed my orangey blond into a luminous golden color without even touching the majority of my head with dye. By freehand painting the highlights, “you only have to place them where you need them most, you get the maximum effect with minimum damage to the hair.” The technique, which she learned in Paris, was very quick, and involved strategically painting on thin strips of color. Rather than baking my hair in foil wraps, which is super drying, she gently separated the layers with a thin piece of plastic wrap. It was pretty clear that with my incredible new color I needed a new cut to match, and I was thrilled when their beauty director, Elad, offered to give me a new style. Goodbye shaggy mane!

He first stood me up to see how I naturally positioned my head and my body before beginning to snip away and my blown out hair. He lopped off probably two inches, and gave me a style that looks beautiful when straight, but also helps my curls form when I wear it naturally. I left the salon feeling like a new girl, with what’s probably the best color and best condition my hair has ever been in!

Red Carpet Roundup: Get Demi Lovato’s Look!

demi-lovato-jonas-brothers-prem.jpgI’m officially coining a new term (hopefully it hasn’t already been, like, trademarked!): “GLOSSIP”. What is glossip, you may be asking? It’s the gossip about how celebs got their beauty look. Get it? Gloss? Gossip? Glossip! Yay!

SO here’s the glossip on Demi Lovato’s look at the Jonas Brothers movie premiere… Makeup artist Sammy Mourabit created the look with Dior products!

“I was amazed by Demi’s talent! She’s an incredible singer and performer and so beautiful, with her big eyebrows and full lips. She reminds me of a mix between a brunette Brigitte Bardot and a younger version Monica Belucci. For this event, the look was ‘vintage Guess girl with a little rock edge’. I achieved that look on using:
-Dior Hydraction serum moisturizer
-Dior Lip Maximizer
-DiorSkin Nude liquid foundation 023
-Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow in Incognito
-Dior Crayon Eyeliner in Trinidad Black
-DiorLiner in Black
-Dior Addict Ultra-Gloss Reflect #347
-Dior Pro Cheeks in Catwalk Pink”

Best Eighties Movies

The Eighties may have had dodgy fashion and even dodgier hair cuts but the one thing that you can say about the decade is it’s movies were damn good. The blockbuster trend continued as Star Wars continued to dominate the box office, as well as the birth of a new action icon but more about that later. The decade provided something for everyone sc-fi,…

Stud Your Sneakers on the Cheap!

Studded sneakers are a fun way to express yourself and add flare to an old or boring pair. Here’s how to do it:

Get a hot glue gun and pick up a pack of prism studs (like these from Michaels, available nationwide at Michael’s stores).

Before you start working, come up with a concept (studs all the way around the bottom above the rubber, studs following the trim near the laces, studs around the Converse logo, etc.).

Play Time with Reebok’s Jukari Fitness Program

reebok-truc-img.jpg

Me holding on to the Flyset post-workout!

This spring, Reebok is partnering up with Cirque du Soleil to introduce a fun and exciting new gym workout called Jukari Fit to Fly in select venues across the world. In the US, the program will be offered in a partnership with select Equinox gyms, but this week I had the opportunity to learn more about the venture and try the beginner’s workout on the beach in Miami!

Basically, Jukari is a Cirque-inspired full-body workout that includes a giant swing called a Flyset to incorporate cardio, strength, balance and core training all together in one group workout session. I’m not a fan of the gym, but there were so many different moves that I never felt bored, and I was motivated by the energy of all the other participants and lost track of time amidst all of the jumping, music, and spinning! It was definitely a great workout if you’re not a fan of treadmills and rowing machines!

Happy Feet: Pedicure Tips

I recently experienced the most thorough, miracle-working pedicure I have ever gotten in my life, courtesy of Mila Yagoudaies at OC61 Spa in NYC. Beforehand, my heels were hard, dry, and cracked because of the super uncomfortable shoes that I had been wearing. (In my defense, I wouldn’t endure such pain unless the shoes were really cute!) No amount of lotion that I rubbed into them brought any relief, but when I left Mila’s pedi chair, my tootsies were totally soft and soothed! I asked Mila what I could do at home to keep my feet in good shape, and the answer was surprisingly simple:

  • Use a foot file on dry (not damp!) skin to effectively smooth away the cracked and flaky skin on your heels. She says files by Soft Touch are the best ones she’s ever used.

  • Smooth a layer of Vaseline onto your heels and massage it in. Then, follow that up with a layer of a thick heel cream for a double dose of moisture.

  • Put on cotton socks to lock the moisture in and leave them on for at least an hour.
