Who better to expound on the do’s and don’ts of skincare than William Hall, a cosmetologist and spokesperson for the Empire Beauty School? Here are his thoughts:
“Skin is the first and most important step in beauty. The problem, however, is that women make mistakes when taking care of their skin. Then, makeup looks bad on the skin after said poor regimen! These are the simple rules to follow:
1.(DO) Always remove your makeup. Makeup contains many chemicals and your skin needs to breathe.
2.(DON’T) If you experience a break out, don’t spread acne mediation ALL over your skin. Apply it directly to the affected area. Acne medications are designed to dry out the affected pore. When you spread it all over, it causes overdrying, thus causing your skin to react and produce more oil–in turn you can have more breakouts! There are many types of acne as well–you should visit a dermatologist to find out what kind you have and the best way to treat it.
3.(DO) Develop a regimen that works for you and stick to it. Oftentimes when I open a friend’s medicine cabinet, I see so many creams, cleansers, toners and spot treatments all with the same anti-acne active ingredients. You only need one. Also, over-the-counter acne medications only penetrate the first layers of skin–if your acne is deep, hard, and cystic, topical acne treatments may just make the problem worse. Add up the costs of all of your acne products, it may be more than the cost to visit your dermatologist. Its always a great idea to get your skin looked over by a doctor.
