Flat Out: How to Combat "Bleh" Winter Hair!

flat-winter-hair.jpgYes, yes, winter can be utter disaster for hair. So to help you guys (and OK! Me!) out, I got some tips for you from Patrick Melville, celebrity hairstylist and owner of the Patrick Melville Salon and Spa in NYC! Here goes…

1. “When the climate changes, you have to adjust your haircut to change with it. In the winter, since your clothes are hitting a higher neckline with turtlenecks and layered looks, the same applies to your hair. Cut some shorter layers into the haircut to add more volume and balance your proportions.”

2. “Flip your head upside down and use a lightweight hairspray to create volume at the root, which will last throughout the day. A modern alternative to hairspray is a lightweight styling glaze, such as Peter Hantz Styling Glaze. You can apply before blow-drying to create a natural look with subtle volume and styling, or apply when your hair is flipped upside down (just half a pump of product) to maintain movement but enhance texture.”

3. “By blowdrying with a Mason Pearson brush, you can create added shine and lift, as well as cut down on static.”

4. “The lack of humidity during the winter months can cause vibrant curls to go limp. I recommend creating a custom blend of a light weight leave-in conditioner like Belegenza’s Encore Leave-In conditioner and a light weight styling glaze and apply to hair when wet and comb through hair evenly. Shake hair upside down and let it dry naturally or diffuse with a blowdryer on a low heat setting. This will also reduces frizz and static.”

Everything I Ever Wanted to Know about My Scalp…

I learned at EIJI Salon NYC!  I recently visited the ultra-sleek space on Madison Avenue for a scalp treatment and analysis. Oh boy. It was pretty crazy! They took a super hi-def camera (one of the only ones in NYC) to take a really, really, really, really closeup look of my hair shaft, follicles, and scalp. It was, to put it mildly, a little gross to see everything in such um graphic detail. BUT I learned a lot about the state of my hair (and that I should be shampooing less often and condition less as well!

Beauty addicts… you have to check this machine out! Oh yes, the scalp massage was pretty dreamy too. :)
