HOMETOWN: Newark, New Jersey

WHAT SHE’S WEARING
: “I am wearing a vintage Romeo and Juliet dress cinched at the waist with a brown, braided belt, ankle-length fringe boots, and various necklaces I have collected throughout the years. I’ve worn this dress as a shirt, sweater, and under garment. You get the most out of your clothes if they are versatile.”

ITALIAN LESSONS: “Alberta Ferretti’s new line Philosophy and Versace will always have a very wholesome place in my heart. Those gowns! Wow!”

SONG SIREN: “My style is influenced by Anti-Folk greats like Laura Marling, Regina Spektor, Martha Wainwright, and Emmy the Great.”

LET HER LOOSE: “I like loud patterns and breezy silhouettes –there is always something flowy about my outfits.”

RAINBOW BRIGHT: “Color is an absolute must –I have a ton of red and purple in my wardrobe. Black is so boring. “

LOCAL FLAVOR: “I have never been shopping in NYC, even though it’s one of my neighboring cities, but I would enjoy a shopping spree in SoHo. Recently, I have been shopping in New Jersey or the Dominican Republic during vacations.”

LEG UP: “I love the new tights trend! I recently bought a bunch of new pairs –lace, plaid and pink!”

CLOCK STOPPER: “I’m still waiting for Twenties-era fashions to reappear –lace, sashed dresses and buck teeth!”

UNDER WRAPS: “A good cardigan never goes out of style. I don’t believe in windbreakers.”

SMALL WONDERS: “My beauty must-haves? A good moisturizing cream, tooth paste, a misty scented perfume, and glittery nail polish!”

20 Questions with Dermalogica Founder Jane Wurwand

A passion for skincare drove Jane Wurwand to become the founder and creator of The International Dermal Institute and Dermalogica, the most professionally requested brand of skincare in the country. “Taking care of your skin is like taking care of your teeth. It is a health necessity!” says Jane. Read on as Jane Wurwand shares her secrets to success and great skin with Teen Vogue.

1. When did you first decide that you wanted a career in skin care?
I worked in a local hair salon after school from the age of 13. My mother was widowed at age 38 and left with 4 girls to raise under the age of 14. She taught us the most important thing was to learn how to DO something that could put food on the table at any time in our futures. The message sank in and I determined that I would follow my passion AND my mother’s practicality!

2. Did you have problem skin growing up?
My skin problem growing up was with dermatitis and eczema but not breakouts. Because of my chronic eczema though I could not use products with fragrance, lanolin, artificial colors, formaldehyde or drying alcohols. That became the premise for the Dermalogica formulations and the reason that so many people can tolerate even our products.

3. What inspired you to create your own skin care line?
I was tired of ’steaming and creaming’ with products that looked and smelled pretty but did not deliver any changes on the skin. I just knew we could do better.

4. How do Dermalogica products differ from other skincare products on the market?
Apart from their ingredient differences as to what we leave OUT of the products, the products are developed for professional use and then in turn, recommended to their clients to use at home. That means we formulate the products at an active level that can achieve results on the skin and are not designed to be ‘picked off the shelf’ and used without prior recommendation.

5. What is your favorite product in the clean start line and why?
Having a favorite product is like naming a favorite child! I developed the products with both my girls in mind [they are aged 10 and 14] and I know that THEIR favorite products are the Smart Mouth Lip Shine and Bedtime for Breakouts. As a concerned Mum, I would have to say the Welcome Matte SPF 15 is certainly one of my favorites — you can never have enough sunblock!

6. Why do you recommend young women regularly get professional skin treatments?
Because it’s never too early to begin taking care of your skin, if you can adopt good habits at an early age you skin will reflect that.

7. Why do young women need teen-specific skin care regimens?
They should be using lightweight products that address their skin concerns at this age like oil control, breakouts and deep cleansing, versus heavier weight formulas which they may not like the feel of or texture of.

8. What is the one thing teens can do to have healthy skin in the future?
Start wearing sunscreen now!

9. Are there any ingredients in skin care products that teens should stay away from?
* Artificial fragrance and color which irritate the skin
* Mineral oil that causes small bumps and undersurface congestion
* Pure lanolin that causes irritation to the follicle and can produce breakouts
* Isopropyl Myristate that is an alternative to using oil but is used in so called “oil free” products to provide a smooth texture but again causes irritation to the skin.
* Alcohol it dries and strips the skins natural barrier lipids.

10. Why is skin health such a challenge for teens?
Because their hormones are raging at this time as their body develops into adulthood. Testosterone comes into play and this can switch the sebaceous gland into over drive causing oily skin, breakouts and acne. Teens’ natural reaction to this is to scrub, deep clean and strip which creates more problems. This is also when they begin to wear make-up, which may contain harmful ingredients like we mention above and to add to this they may not be removing it properly.

Safety First: Guidelines for Makeup Disposal

My friend Sarah once used a mascara she found, dried up and gross, on the bottom of her handbag. And what did she get? The GROSSEST, ooziest eye infection. Ew! With that in mind, I asked Philippe Chansel, Creative Director of Ready To Wear Cosmetics, for tips on makeup disposal. His thoughts:

“The first thing to remember is to keep your makeup and makeup bag clean. That means washing brushes, sponges and puffs regularly (every one to two weeks). Doing this is better for your skin and your colors come out truer instead of muddy. Anything that is liquid or cream can develop bacteria faster than dry products. Powder products can be kept for a few years if kept clean. All products are required by the FDA to have preservative systems in them and to use ingredients that are safe. If you keep your makeup clean, away from heat and sunlight, most products should have a two to three year shelf life. You should be able to keep your mascara for the length of time it takes you to finish a tube if you use it daily. This is usually about three to five months. Just remember to never share your mascara and to throw it out if you have an eye infection and buy a new one once the infection is over. The better you take care of your products the longer you can keep them but for all lipsticks, lip glosses, foundations, etc. I would throw them out after about a year if you haven’t worn them. It’s like your wardrobe - you haven’t worn it in a year, get rid of it.”

Ev’Yan Nasman

EvYan-Nasman.jpgAGE: 21
HOMETOWN: Pasadena, CA
WHAT SHE’S WEARING: “I am wearing a handmade crocheted shirt, shorts cut from old vintage jeans, tights from Target, and sandals from Ross.”

LOW-KEY LADY: “I don’t really keep track of who’s-who in the designer world. I mean, I know the names of people, but I don’t follow runway shows or ad campaigns. I think it’s because I’m such a laid-back girl. If I see something in a magazine I like, I get inspired. Usually, though, I just wear what I like.”

CALI COOL: “I am inspired by all kind of things: music, art, nature, and especially the weather here in LA. My style icons are Zoe Kravitz and Erin Wasson.”

WORK IN PROGRESS: “My style is still evolving, so it’s a bit hard to pinpoint. But I have a tendency of being androgynous –I really love men’s fashions.”

BIG BRAND BABE: “When shopping, I like to keep it local. I stay around my hometown and love to visit Target and Ross –simple places where you can find staples to customize to your wardrobe accordingly.”

MADE IN THE SHADE: “I’m obsessed with my Rayban sunglasses. I got them for my birthday a few weeks ago and I am still lusting after them. I’ll take any excuse to wear them, I love them so much. If I could wear them when it’s cloudy outside, I would!”

HEAD GAMES: “I love that Forties style headwear is making a come back. My sister recently made me a headband with black & peacock feathers on it. I hope to go to the craft store soon to make some of my own.”

FACE TIME: “Spearmint flavored Chap Stick and Great Lash mascara are my beauty essentials. I could wear nothing else and be completely satisfied.”
